Psychology Myth Power poses such as standing with your arms crossed boosts testosterone and makes you a more confident risk-taker. Amy Cuddy's presentation about power poses from 2012 is one of the most popular TED Talks of all-time. In it, Cuddy relays research suggesting that "power posing" can boost feelings of confidence and hormone levels, specifically testosterone. ... Though research is continuing to develop, many studies have shown no meaningful change in risk-taking or hormones after power posing. However, in support of Cuddy's research, studies have supported the effects of power posing on positive psychological and behavioral outcomes. This includes one study of over 200 people that saw a consistent effect in self-reported feelings of power. So while Cuddy's research has been widely argued against, there is some truth to it, primarily that power poses have the ability to make people feel more powerful. However, that's where the effect ends according to several other extensive studies. These poses do not have an effect on behavioral or cognitive measures, and Cuddy's co-author of the original study has said: "My views have updated to reflect the evidence. As such, I do not believe that power pose effects are real."
