Dementia, what is it? Dementia is a group of symptoms associated with decline or loss of memory and other thinking skills that effect a person's ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 - 80% of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common type. But there are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies.... Some risk factors for dementia, such as age and genetics, cannot be changed. But there are some things you can do to reduce your chances of developing dementia: -Maintain good heart health. -Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Regularly engage in physical activity / exercise; and maintain a good diet featuring lots of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil and other healthy fats. -Stay mentally & socially active.
