Two of our Certified Hand Therapist enjoyed some time learning new things at the ASHT hand conference in St. Louis this weekend. Robin Howard-Boyd in our Columbia clinic and Morgan Thompson of the Sedalia and Marshall clinics. They are always staying ahead and on the cutting edge of their profession.

What you can expect: Physical Therapists use various techniques to help restore patients to their prior level of functionality. This means we want to get you back to where you were, or as close to it, before your pain began. These techniques go beyond stretching and lifting, but yes, they do include a home exercise plan. A home exercise plan for a physical therapist is equivalent to a pharmaceutical prescription from a physician. When done in coordination with clinical visits..., these prescribed exercises are integral to restore function and improve quality of life. Patients should view this as a tool to help you get better, not grueling homework. Physical therapists have many tools and techniques at their disposal. Among them are the more common resistance bands, dumbbells, cable pulleys, ultrasounds, and electric stimulation. There are also lesser-known tools available like cold laser, dry needling, Kinesiotaping, cupping, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, and blood flow restriction therapy. However, the most important tool a physical therapist has at their disposal is their hands. Manual therapy is a fundamental aspect of good physical therapy. Through manual therapy, therapists can help mobilize tight joints and tissues, isolate weak muscles, and relieve trigger points that contribute to poor movement quality or pain.
Defining a Passion Jokingly we have been called Pain and Torture specialists and Physical Terrorists, but what is Physical Therapy really? A physical therapist, or more casually put, a PT, is a musculoskeletal specialist who has dedicated no less than six years of schooling to learn the complex mechanics of the human body. This individual can assess, evaluate, and treat any part of the human anatomy, including the lesser-known facets of PT like the jaw, pelvic floor, and ...headaches. Physical therapists have the rewarding task of taking patients from their low points and starting them back onto the path to their normal. They know that there is both a physical and emotional aspect of pain.
National Physical Therapy month allows PT professionals to share what makes this industry fulfilling for clinicians and patients alike. We love our patients, and based on some of our feedback; we believe they feel the same way about us.
