Students in SSD teacher Kelsey Magee’s class at Parkwood Elementary School are working on a science unit and learning about the life cycle of flowers. Today, ex...ecutive secretary Veronica White joined her friends and helped them put soil and seeds in pots they painted themselves. They also went outside and placed Penny White Jump-Ups in the pot at the front of the school. Full photo gallery: http://bit.ly/PWgardening See more

Members of the Spongey Books from Parkwood Elementary School raised their arms in celebration when the final points totals were posted and they realized they wo...n this year’s district-wide Mark Twain Book Battle. They narrowly defeated two teams from Rose Acres that tied for second place and it took three tie-breaker questions to determine the final standings. Another team from Parkwood finished in fourth. The Book Battle is an annual trivia-type competition hosted by Pattonville's school library technology specialists. During the event, teams of students compete on their knowledge of a predesignated list of books. For the elementary contest, participating students read from among the 12 books nominated by the Missouri Association of School Librarians for the Mark Twain Readers Award. Parkwood’s library technology specialist Dawn Kasper-Bamberger and Rose Acres library technology specialist Nicole Mikel hosted the competition over Zoom from their libraries with in-person team members working with Villemade students. The questions and scoreboard were shown on a large screen at each school. All answers to each of the three questions in eight rounds was a specific author and title of books on the 2020-2021 Mark Twain Readers Award nominee list. Parkwood Elementary School’s annual Panther Paws to Lend a Helping Hand Collection was its largest ever, helping 58 families. Staff signed up to purchase gifts ...and more than $300 was donated to the program. Staff members also raised $380 by giving $20 to wear jeans for the entire month and second grade teacher Greg Stoltz gave his winnings from the school’s The Biggest Loser competition to the fund. We combined donations from Helping Hands, Pattonville Gives and the Pattonville Fire Protection District toy drive in order to help 58 families, principal Ms. Melissa Yount-Ott said. We combined all the efforts together to meet the needs of every family that requested holiday or winter assistance for students in the form of clothing, toys/gifts, and books. Special thanks goes to Parkwood Student Council members for creating this year’s holiday card, the parent involvement committee sponsored by Kelley Chestnut and Elle Irons, and the social committee sponsored by Kristen Buescher and Audrey Masek.

In-person and Villemade students at Parkwood Elementary School recently completed a collaborative mural that was inspired by Kelsey Montague Art and installed n...ear the front lobby of the school. Students can interact with it and have their picture taken. We were inspired by Kelsey Montague who is an internationally-known street artist who creates interactive art, art teacher Ms. Janel MacLean said. She has artwork all over the world, and third grade teacher Ms. Brittany Flachs recently took a photo in front of the one in Nashville which features a pair of wings. Her art just brings people into the middle of it and we wanted to do something like that here, MacLean said. The theme of Montague’s Nashville piece is #WhatLiftsYou. We decided one way to lift up our school and bring everybody together when some of us are apart is art, MacLean said. She had all of her students contribute to the mural regardless of their learning choice. Students in the art room used watercolors and online students did it on SeeSaw and made digital versions that we were able to print, she said. Because all of Kelsey’s work is done using paint pens, I bought the same kind of paint pens she uses so the kids could use those, too.
