Parkville Rotary would like to send out a huge congratulations to Amy Montalbano for being selected for the inaugural Rotary District 6040 Youth Peacebuilder Award! Amy Montalbano, a senior at Park Hill South High school and Parkville resident, was selected by a district committee to receive the award, which includes a $2500 scholarship. Selection committee chair Steven Youngblood, District 6040 Peacebuilding Ambassador, said Montalbano’s application was beyond outstanding.... Her commitment to peace and building bridges of understanding is impressive for anyone, let alone someone just coming out of high school. Montalbano’s volunteering includes extensive work at Harvester’s, through HOSA-Future Health Professionals, and as an active Girl Scout. The committee was also impressed with her initiatives as president of her school’s Young Republicans, including efforts to reach out to and collaborate with the school’s Young Democrats on a Veteran’s Day program. In her recommendation letter, Park Hill South teacher Brad Peck notes, When I take a step back and look at all the things that she is involved in, and that she excels in, I wonder how she fits it all into a 24-hour day. She exemplifies all the character traits and academic excellence that an institute of higher education is looking for in prospective students. The Youth Peacebuilder Award is given to a student who is engaged in peacebuilding locally, nationally, or globally in activities that assist the disadvantaged and marginalized; build bridges between groups; and prevent or mitigate conflict. The Youth Peacebuilder Award will be presented to Amy Montalbano at an upcoming meeting of the Parkville Rotary Club by Rotary District 6040 President Marc Horner. Because of the Covid-19 shutdowns, the date of the award presentation is still to be determined. Montalbano plans to attend Michigan State University in the fall, where she will major in supply chain management.

This grant will educate children of high risk communities affected by trauma from Hurricane Maria and provide school teachers and parents in basic life skills that will lead to a change in attitudes and behavior to promote a positive, peaceful and safe social environment in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. Happy New Year Parkville Rotarians!! See you Sunday night at our annual Snowflake Party!!

Parkville Rotary 04.05.2020

It’s Giving Tuesday! Please consider a donation to Rotary! Here are a few reasons to donate to Rotary on Giving Tuesday? 1. We fight disease around the world.... For decades, Rotary has been a leader in the battle against polio and has kept the pressure on as worldwide cases plummeted from 350,000 in 1988 to about 100 cases this year. We’re closer than ever to ending this devastating disease. Your impact will be even greater, thanks to a 2-to-1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. All donations (up to $50 million) to end polio will be tripled, providing critical funding to our work to create a polio-free world. 2. We teach people to read. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults through mentoring, scholarships, teacher training, and access to learning opportunities. 3. We build peace. Each year, armed conflict and persecution displace, injure, or kill millions of people. More than 90 percent of them are civilians, and half are children. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. Our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. 4. We grow local economies. Nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day. Rotary is working to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders. We know that one solution doesn’t fit every problem, so we work with people to help them help themselves. We help Tanzanians with albinism find safe, healthy livelihoods. In Ecuador, Rotary has made 250 microloans and trained more than 270 people in job skills and business management. In Arkansas, USA, we worked with Heifer International to extend the growing season for farmers and help them find new customers. 5. We save mothers and children. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation. More than 800 women die every day from birth- and pregnancy-related complications. Rotary is saving lives by supplying birthing kits, immunizations, neonatal care equipment, and medical training. With access to quality care, mothers and children live longer and healthier lives, and Rotary is providing that care. You can start the holiday season on a charitable note by donating on Giving Tuesday, December 3rd. Please visit http://Rotary.org/donate to make your gift.

Today is World Polio Day! Today, on World Polio Day, Rotary and its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners announced that wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) has been eradicated worldwide. WPV3 is only the third infectious human disease-causing pathogen to be eradicated in history, following smallpox and wild poliovirus type 2. This achievement means that two of the three wild polio strains have now been wiped out, an important marker of progress against the disease. The ann...ouncement comes on the heels of recent news that Nigeria has gone three years without a case of wild poliovirus, which means that the entire African region could be certified wild poliovirus-free in sometime in 2020. The eradication of wild poliovirus type three is a critical step in Rotary’s fight to eradicate polio, said Michael K. McGovern, Chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. Even as we’re addressing major challenges in Pakistan and Afghanistan, we continue to make historic progress that shows us that eradication is possible. Today is World Polio Daya time to reflect on our efforts, how far we’ve come, and the work that still needs to be done to fulfill our promise of a polio-free world. It’s important that we remain optimistic and harness the momentum of this good news as we tackle the remaining challenges in the global effort to end polio. Anyone can help Rotary and its partners continue to make progress against polio. Donate to End Polio Now. Happy News Alert! Today, the Parkville Rotary presented a check for $1,000 to Park University's Pirate Pantry! I was completely surprised and very grateful!! ...I volunteer in the pantry and know first-hand that our students (the majority of whom are working and going to school) are humble and grateful. If we can get students to graduation and into well-paying jobs, I believe they will give back to their communities, emulating the values they saw exhibited by their community during their time at Park. I'm grateful to be a part of the KC Northland! This community is incredibly caring! The Rotary gave checks not only to the pantry but also to Synergy, the Nature Sanctuary, and several others, too. We are all blessed by the Parkville Rotary's generosity and hard work in ways most of us may be unaware!! Pictured with me is Dalyn Novak who ably leads the Rotary and who is passionate about community service! If you're at all inspired to be a part of this excellent group that is devoted to making the world a better place, we would love to have you! Let me know! See more
