Staff held a controlled burn at the sanctuary today to set back our warm season grass-dominated prairie to allow for greater biodiversity of plants and a more complex habitat for animals and insects. With the surrounding neighborhoods, we want to be good neighbors and prevent the spread of invasive plant species! Thank you Southern Platte Fire Protection District and Missouri Department of Conservation for your assistance.

Blue Bird Trail and Butterfly Pass will be closed today at 3 p.m. for a controlled burn. Staff is working closely with the fire district and the Missouri Department of Conservation to test a 20 sq. ft. patch to ensure all our equipment is working properly. The test burn will help to prepare for a larger controlled burn in the near future. Controlled burns allow for a greater biodiversity of plants and will provide a more complex habitat for the animals and insects.

Santa has to stay at the NORTH POLE this year, but this will not hinder our CHRISTMAS CHEER! Drop your letter in his official mailbox located on the picnic tables at the entrance (letters and envelopes available at kiosk). Don’t forget to include your return mailing address so Santa can reply!
