As soon as I saw Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, I decided this post needed a theme. But because nothing is purrfect, there are some exceptions to the rule

Short stories truly don't get enough love. You'd think in our fast-paced world, everyone would be reading short stories, or at least poetry! But no--so many amazing collections go unseen, and so many amazing stories go unread. For readers, I recommend Danielle Evans' BEFORE YOU SUFFOCATE YOUR OWN FOOL SELF. This collection has my favorite parts of any good short story: wonderfully rendered narrators and characters, engaging dialogue, and an honesty to the prose that makes it... impossible to not feel immersed in the writing. While I'm arguing for people to simply read more short stories every now and again, I blew through this collection in a day. For writers, I recommend Lucia Berlin's A MANUAL FOR CLEANING WOMEN. every time I read these stories, I feel like I learn the basics of fiction all over again. Berlin's writing style can be accessible and complex at the same time, with so many unique decisions on the line level, and characters that truly feel like people you know (or have chatted with at the laundromat). I first read this collection after a long bout of writer's block, and before I knew it I was writing again like a totally new person. I love these stories. --shane #shortstories #fiction #writing #reading #indiebookstore #booksbooksbooks #danielleevans #luciaberlin

We need a new word in English that means "hungry for books," because I literally want to read everything that has been coming into the shop lately. I feel like I'm in a constant, positive anxiety of trying to read as much as possible! It makes me feel a little bit crazy, but in the best way. I think a lot of it has to do with A SWIM IN THE POND IN THE RAIN, which I know we've been talking about a lot already, but really: if you're a reader who's interested in in-depth readin...gs of short stories, or if you're a writer who needs some renewed guidance and inspiration, I can't recommend that book enough. I've taken the last year or so off from writing fiction, which has been challenging and a little bit scary for me, because for so long it has been all I've known. As I try to start writing again, this book has become a faraway lighthouse that I'm rowing and writing to, trusting the words and trying to find my own again. And also, George Saunders is just his usual, funny, charming, weird self, which is refreshing in its own right. Whatever book you're craving, we've got something for you. And if it's not here already, I'll track it down!! Open until 5 today; come say hello! --shane #writing #georgesaunders #booksbooksbooks #reading #indiebookshop

A recommendation today ~ and perfect for a gifting book ~ WHAT UNITES US by esteemed journalist Dan Rather, now out in paperback. <3 "The one thing that we as a people went through in 1968 that we're going through again now is basically the question, can we hold it together? Can we hold the country together? Can we stand united? Can we agree on enough core principles and core values of the country to hold ourselves together? And it was an open question in 1968, and it's an op...en question today, which is one reason that I originally did the hardcover book, 'What Unites Us,' and one reason I wanted to put this paperback edition out, to talk about ... the book is not meant to provide answers, but the hope is that we can start a conversation about our core values just to name two, the rule of law and the right to vote. But there's dissent, and a free press, inclusion, empathy, a belief in science and knowledge, public education all of these are values that I think the overwhelming majority of Americans agree on." ~ Dan Rather https://shop.paginationbookshop.com/book/9781616209940

It was the spirit of poetry who reached out and found me as I stood there at the doorway between panic and love. ~ Joy Harjo Dearest readers, We've been thinking a lot these past months about the books to help us in times of crisis, and yesterday, in lieu of her traditional book club selection, Oprah Winfrey named seven essential titles in her curated listing, "The Books That Helped Me Through."... Here's an excerpt from the article in Oprah Magazine: In each of these books, Oprah said, and for various reasons, I find comfort, beauty, inspiration, reassurance. At a time when the ground is shifting beneath us, we need to continue to find ways of living our best lives, and for me, there is no best life without books. ~ The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, which Oprah says has changed the course of her life and continues to guide her. ~ The Soul of America by Jon Meacham, for how it reminds us that previous dark chapters in our nation’s history have been temporary, and we emerged from them. ~ Devotions by the late, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver, whose observations about joy, nature, and humanity soothe and touch us. ~ Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, both of which, from different decades, wrestle with racism and inequality. ~ The magnificent third novel by Toni Morrison, Song of Solomon . ~ The recently released When the Light of the World Was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through: a Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry edited by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo that is filled with pain, hope, and resilience. Oprah invites readers to join her beginning today through November 30 at Oprah's Book Club Instagram and Facebook pages, using the hashtag #ReadWithUs to connect and share thoughts about these remarkable books. ... Recommended: APPALACHIAN RECKONING: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy: "With hundreds of thousands of copies sold, a Ron Howard movie in the works, and the rise of its author as a media personality, J.D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis has defined Appalachia for much of the nation. ... Appalachian Reckoning is a retort, at turns rigorous, critical, angry, and hopeful, to the long shadow Hillbilly Elegy has cast over the region and its ...imagining. But it also moves beyond Hillbilly Elegy to allow Appalachians from varied backgrounds to tell their own diverse and complex stories through an imaginative blend of scholarship, prose, poetry, and photography. The essays and creative work collected in Appalachian Reckoning provide a deeply personal portrait of a place that is at once culturally rich and economically distressed, unique and typically American. Complicating simplistic visions that associate the region almost exclusively with death and decay, Appalachian Reckoning makes clear Appalachia's intellectual vitality, spiritual richness, and progressive possibilities." I still think I live in Gaiman’s world more than my own. For us maladjusted misfits, an escape to his worlds was all that enabled us to endure ours. I would say that Gaiman creates the kind of work that begets obsessions, but that seems too easy. All great art has its devotees, but Gaiman, particularly for other writers and oddballs, regardless of genre or art form, gives us permission to never let go of the world of wonder that we’re all told at some time to leave behind. ~ Marlon James

Supply chai...n and COVID-19-related disruptions are anticipated for retail the closer we get to mid to late December, due to lower printing capacity because of social distancing requirements and high demand, anticipated holiday shipping delays, and reduced capacity for in-person bookstore shopping. The Buy Early campaign was launched this month along with the American Booksellers Association #BoxedOut campaign to highlight the importance of independent bookstores to their local neighborhoods. Bookstore storefronts were covered in sayings such as Don’t let indie bookstores become a work of fiction and Books curated by real people ~ not a creepy algorithm. See more

A selection of new arrivals and returning favorites! We are most excited about THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES by Alix E. Harrow, described as "A gorgeous and thrilling paean to the ferocious power of women. The characters live, bleed, and roar." From NPR: "If spells ("witch-ways" in the novel) are truly hidden in stories, then I know what spell is in The Once and Future Witches. It's the spell to claim a heart and dwell there, ever after. I unabashedly, unreservedly adore The Once and Future Witches. I adore it with the kind of passion that prickles at my eyes and wavers my voice. "Once upon a time, Alix Harrow wrote about three sisters. Also, suffragists, witching, folklore, flawed alliances, an alternate America, and women's work. She gave this novel many gifts: charm, grace, and gorgeousness; feral wonder, clear vision, an ardent heart. She gave it history, awareness of injustice and will to survive it. And so it went into the world to seek its fortune, inviting readers to settle in; to sigh with the pleasure of finding a not too this, not too that,... just right story. If spells ("witch-ways" in the novel) are truly hidden in stories, then I know what spell is in The Once and Future Witches. It's the spell to claim a heart and dwell there, ever after. I unabashedly, unreservedly adore The Once and Future Witches. I adore it with the kind of passion that prickles at my eyes and wavers my voice. I adore it in a way that requires purchase of a giving copy, for friends in need." ~ Jessica Wick, NPR {I've reposted the link to the review in its entirety below in comments!} We are so excited about THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES by Hugo Award-winning writer Alix E. Harrow. A PERFECT read right now in every way. Order today for pickup or shipping!
