We loved having the Stoutland 3rd grade come out to the farm! It was a great group of animal loving kids. They had the best questions and were so excited to learn about the fish. Per usual the crayfish and tadpoles were the biggest hit with the group.

It’s that time of year! It is starting to get warm enough for the fish to want to spawn. Joe is putting out spawning mats along the edge of the pond. These mats provide an area for the fish to come up and spawn. They are then collected and put into our indoor hatchery for the baby fish to hatch out. #ozarkfisheries #thefarmstory #fishfarmstory #koi #familyfishfarm #goldfish #aquaculture101 #fishfarming101 #spawning

Happy Friday from the farm. We love these cool crisp farm mornings but we are needing some warmer weather for the fish to start spawning! #ozarkfisheries #thefarmstory #fishfarmstory #koi #familyfishfarm #goldfish #fishspawningseason

Which fish is your favorite?

Behind the scenes of fish photography. It’s not easy to photograph moving fish in water! Lighting, glare and water droplets are also a challenge. This bucket cut in half with a glass front helps a little! We also sometimes use clean white buckets or colanders. #ozarkfisheries #fishphotography #goldfish #koi #fishfarmstory #thefarmstory

Have you seen the 2021 farmer’s almanac? Check out this short article about how to pick a pet! We are a little partial to thinking fish are the best pets.

Our fish spend a majority of their lives on our farm in our ponds. They are born in our fish hatchery and then moved into the ponds when they are three days old. The fish will stay in the ponds until they are at a good size and color to sell. They then are brought into our shipping department to sell and are shipped all over North America. #fishfarmfact #ozarkfisheries #ozarkfisheriesgoldfish #fishfact #pondraised #usabornandraised #thefarmstory #fishfarmstory

What a difference a few months make for the water flow on a fish farm! The first picture is the runoff of one of our springs back in May. The second is what that same spillway looks like now in October with no runoff. We sure could use some rain!

We have lots of crayfish in stock this week! The cooler fall temperatures make it a great time to stock a pond!

We’ve had some beautiful larger koi this season! Here is a peek into the tank of a group we had a few weeks ago. *These specific large koi are all sold out but we do have beautiful smaller koi in stock. #ozarkfisheries #ozarkfisherieskoi #koi

Fish Fact Friday: SHUBUNKIN Goldfish These calico colored goldfish have a funny name but sure are pretty! These two year old fish have matured coloration and finnage. Did you know that some of the best and brightest blue calico color comes from spawning a dark colored shubunkin with a pearl or the light blue colored shubunkin? While these big beauties are going back in our ponds as part of our broodstock we still have lots of great shubunkins in stock each week! ... #ozarkfisheries #ozarkfisheriesshubunkins #fishfacts #goldfish #shubunkin See more

We are loving the rain and the cooler temperatures here at the farm this week! Our Missouri team did not like having to package and ship fish without power yesterday after a strong storm rolled through and knocked out our electricity. Our team adjusted and buckled down to do it the old fashion way with no machines. We got all our orders shipped from our farm to our customer’s doorstep. Thankfully we were lucky enough to get the power back on a few hours later. #ozarkfisheries #aquaculture #livefish #fishfarmstory #thefarmstory

Fish Fact Friday: Koi Fry aka Baby Koi We brought in new crop koi for the first time this week. These are baby koi that were born earlier this spring and are just a few months old. Koi are all born yellow in color and develop their true color over the first few months. This group of koi babies do already have pretty good coloration. It is important for them to have lots of sunshine and space with a high quality feed to grow and develop great color. #fishfactfriday #ozarkfisheries #ozarkfisherieskoi #fishyfacts #koi #babykoi #koifry

A quick peak into one of our butterfly koi tanks. There are a few standard fin koi mixed in this tank as well. Can you spot the difference between the two? Look carefully at the fins and tail. The koi with longer fins and tails will be butterfly koi. #ozarkfisheries #ozarkfisherieskoi #fishfacts #butterflykoi #koi

Did you know that our aquatic trapdoor snails have live babies? They look just like miniature versions of their parents... sometimes with a little less algae on them! #ozarkfisheries #ozarkfisheriessnails #fishfacts #snails #trapdoorsnails #aquaticsnails

This is a great looking mix of koi! Did you know that some koi have different scale patterns? The fish in the center with ladder back scale pattern is known as a Doitsu or German scaled koi. They can have larger mirror or armored scales as well as be scaleless on sections of their body. They are some of our favorites! #fishfact #ozarkfisheries #ozarkfisheriesgoldfish #fishyfacts #doitsu #doitsukoi #koi
