Quote of the day: "Christian Living" In the town of Port Hope, Canada, there stands a monument, not for the leading citizen who just died, but for a poor, unselfish working man who gave most of his life and energy to help those who could not repay him. Joseph Scriven was born in Dublin in 1820. In his youth, he had the prospect of a g...reat citizen with high ideals and great aspirations. He was engaged to a beautiful young woman who had promised to share his dreams, but on the eve of their wedding her body was pulled from a pond into which she had accidentally fallen and drowned.Young Scriven never overcame the shock. Although a college graduate and ready to embark on a brilliant career, he began to wander to try to forget his sorrow. His wanderings took him to Canada where he spent the last forty-one of his sixty-six years. He became a very devout Christian. His beliefs led him to do servile labor for poor widows and sick people. He often served for no wages. It was not known that Mr. Scriven had any poetic gifts until a short time before his death. A friend, who was sitting with him in an illness, discovered a poem he had written to his mother in a time of sorrow, not intending that anyone should see it. What poem did he write? COME BACK NEXT WEEK TO SEE. Scripture of the day: Mark 1:14-20 Scriptures to read: Psalm 62:5-12 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

When the Magi enter the house, they not only see Jesus, but see him with Mary his mother. This is another epiphany: God is a God of relationship. Jesus doesn’...t drop out of the sky like Thor or an alien invader. He comes to us in relationship, where our identity is wrapped up in who we are with him. It is in this relational context that true worship takes place. The wise men don’t worship outside the house; worship takes place alongside brothers and sisters who come to pay homage, sharing all they have with Jesus. Who is Jesus calling you into community with? Is there a group of neighbors or friends you can intentionally worship with between Sundays? This could look like text messages about how God is working in your lives, gathering to read scripture together, or sharing a meal and testimonies with one another. #GCIMeditationMonday See more
