Good news! In a study examining the outcomes of breast cancer patients diagnosed with SARS-Cov-2, an academic center in New York City concluded that while treatment disruptions did occur among patients, the majority of breast cancer patients did not require hospitalization. There has been a lot of information floating around on the internet about the immune effects of vitamin D these past several months. I’ve heard of several people taking large doses of vitamin D to help protect their immune system. According to the research, it might not be an effective strategy. Here’s what we know According to an article published by BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health (https://nutrition.bmj.com/content/3/1/106), taking mega doses of vitamin D may not be hel...pful in preventing or treating COVID-19. In fact, taking high doses of vitamin D may confer health risks including impaired kidney function. However, observational study in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40520-020-01570-8) found a correlation between countries with low vitamin D levels and a higher incidence and mortality of COVID-19. It is important to note that correlation does not necessarily mean causation, but it does suggest there could possibly be a benefit to improving your vitamin D status if you are deficient. Other studies have previously suggested that adequate vitamin D levels may be protective in acute respiratory infections. If you are considering using more than 3000 IU a day of vitamin D, we would first recommend getting your vitamin D status checked your healthcare provider. If you are vitamin D deficient, please work with your healthcare provider to determine the best way and amount to supplement. Secondly, make sure you do follow up testing over time, so that you get enough but not too much that it could cause other risks.

Is Chronic Stress Affecting Your Health? Everyone experiences stress at one time or another, but chronic high stress, and how that stress is perceived, can be detrimental to your physical and mental health. It can instigate feelings of anxiety and overwhelming fear. It can also weaken your immune system and overall health, leaving you susceptible to colds and flu, an increase in aches and pains, as well as many serious illnesses. When most people think of stress, they usually... limit their definition to mental and emotional stressors. Changing jobs or losing a loved one, for example, can send your stress (and cortisol) levels soaring. However, events like blood sugar imbalances, inadequate sleep and inflammation, are also potent stimulators of cortisol production within the HPA axis. The result is an activation of the stress response system. Yesterday, I attended the Connect 2020 Virtual Conference by the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians. They pulled together outstanding speakers. I had the opportunity to learn more about hormone health, pain management, the influence of our gut microbiome on the drugs & supplements we ingest, how to safely address blood pressure for our elders, and updates on COVID-19 from the State of Washington. Hats off to the WANP for the great job they did!
