The OFPD sends our love and support to our Brothers and Sisters of the Louisville Division of Fire. Today, Firefighter Lesley D Prather was posthumously awarded the prestigious Blue Coats of Louisville Inc. Firefighter of the Year award.

Fire spreads quickly! WORKING smoke alarms save lives by giving you and your loved ones the advance warning you need to make your escape. Take a few minutes each month to test the smoke alarms in your home.

All we want for Christmas ... is for you to water your tree daily and make sure it is at least 3' from any heat sources, such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, lamps or lights! A dry tree can easily ignite and cause serious damage to your home. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly (especially one that hasn't been watered regularly)! The kitchen is often the heart of our homes especially during the holidays! Keep your celebrations happy and hazard-free: Test your home's smoke alarms before you begin. Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves that could catch fire. Never leave cooking unattended, and always use a timer so nothing is forgotten on the stove or in the oven. Avoid cooking too many things at once, which can be overwhelming for many home chefs.... Keep your oven clear of clutter (ie. pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, towels or curtains) and clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup. Keep kids and pets at least 3' from the stove, and always supervise young kitchen helpers. Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens, and small appliances are turned off. See more

Did you know? Almost three of every five December home decoration fires were started by candles, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)! Protect your household this holiday season by keeping lit candles away from anything that might ignite, and always blowing candles out before you leave the room or go to bed.
