Blog of a Homebound Pastor Blog 35 February 17 Years ago at a previous church I pastored there was a man that helped me make announcements in a way nobody would forget. When I/we wanted to promote some event in the church all I had to do was tell him the jest of what was needed and he would bring it to life. I think his wife came up with the ideas and then let him act it out. I never knew what he was going to do. When it came time for the announcements he would come ...prancing down the aisle, most of the time in costume and everybody would recognize him as Bumbling Bob. When he got to the prayer rail he would interact with me and we would both adlib and most of the time it was very silly. One year as we approached the Lenten season I asked him to bring attention to the coming Ash Wednesday Service and the beginning of the Lenten Study. Bumbling Bob came dancing down the aisle and when I got close I asked him what was going on. He said I am here for the Lent Study. I said I am glad you are going to participate. You seem really excited about this. He smiled and reached in his pocket, said, Yes, I even brought my own Lent. And then reached in his pocket and pulled out this big wad of Dryer Lint. I share this because today is the beginning of the Lenten Season. Normally we have an Ash Wednesday service to remind us of the season for sacrifice but this year, due to the pandemic, we have opted not to have that in person service or an in person Lenten Study. Most of you have the Devotional pamphlet The Sanctuary for Lent 2021. If you don’t, I have two extras and will be glad to send you one. I encourage you to read the daily devotionals by setting aside some time each day to reflect on the readings and be in a time of self examination. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, (actually 46 days because Sundays are not counted) Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities. I also encourage you to make a personal sacrifice: like coffee, chocolate, foul language, or gossip. Or you could give up some of your time and volunteer somewhere God is calling for your ministry. I don’t know about all of you but this pandemic has caused me to gain back a lot of those pounds that I lost last year. That is my story and I’m sticking to it. I can sure use some discipline on my food intake. A commitment to sacrifice will often get your attention. I have also made a commitment to serve at a food kitchen on Saturdays at the Linwood and Olive area. Using the Daily Devotional we will meet each Wednesday evening at 6 pm by Zoom for discussion. Friends, We have always had a Lenten and Advent Study until this Spring at the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic. I would like to invite you to be a part of this Advent Study. It will be through Zoom and I will need your email address to connect you each of the four weeks. I would like to have them on Wednesday evenings at 6pm to give as many as possible the opportunity to participate. If I can make it work through the hot spot on my phone. I will have in person study at the same time in the sanctuary. Oakland UMC Men's Group trimmed trees, cleaned and mowed a yard and cleaned rain gutters for a lady in Blue Springs through the The Whole Person Organization program.
