Some members recently reported to us here at the library that our most recent journal, Celebrations, was received. The journals were taken to the post office on December 1st. It is very sad that it took a month for them to be delivered to our members. If you are a member who signed up for mailed copies and did not get your copy, please email Connie at [email protected]

H. S. Mahan built a dozen charming tudor style homes in the Lovers Lane Place development in the late 1920's. Mahan hired Artcrafts Engraving Co. to help promo...te the sale of his model home at 2005 Lovers Lane, whose roof featured hand-dipped cedar shingles in three different stain colors. Late-1950's view up Charles Street, looking east from 5th street. Along the south side of Charles Street the back corner of the St Charles Hotel is barely visi...ble on the extreme right, followed by the Uptown Hotel, the Old Turner Hall at 6th street, a Standard station at 7th, the old Western Chemical building at 8th, and the bell tower of First Lutheran at 10th. If you follow directly up the sidewalk on the left (north) side of Charles, the Artcrafts Engraving Co sign is visible at the 8th street intersection See more

The building at 429 Illinois has a long history of feeding the Southside of St. Joseph since 1898but everyone knows it by its simple name that harkens back to ...the heyday of the stockyardsthe Hoof & Horn. Originally built to house a saloon to serve the Livestock Exchange building (also built in 1898) the Hoof & Horn has outlasted all of the establishments of the turn of the century stockyards, and is actually the oldest restaurant in town. The space changed hands many times until 1938 when it became known as the Hoof & Horn Tavern which is operating to this daystill serving their signature steaks and other family favorites after all this time!
