We are thrilled to recognize our culminating HES Spring 2021 Award Recipients! CONGRATULATIONS to the Distinguished Graduate Research Award recipient, Mary Moo...re, Graduate Research Assistant, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology . Mary Moore’s contributions to the Nutrition and Exercise Physiology field are outstanding and will no doubt have lasting impact on our understanding of the pathophysiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Prior to the completion of her dissertation, Mary already has 12 peer-reviewed research publications, which includes 6 first-author publications in highly prestigious journals in her field as well as >15 first- or co-author abstracts presented at local, regional, national and international meetings. Mary's scientific presentations have resulted in the receipt of a number of highly competitive awards, supporting the significance and novelty of her work, as well as her excellence in scientific communication. On the University of Missouri campus, Mary was one of the top recipients of the campus-wide Research & Creative Activities Forum Presentation Award (2020) and the School of Medicine Dean's Award for Outstanding Student Research (2019). Mary has been identified as an emerging leader in her field, with immense promise as a future scholar. As a testament to this, Mary was an invited speaker at the most recent UCLA Mitochondria Symposium (2020), as well as the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions (2020) which had over 12,500 participants from around the world. Even more impressive, as a pre-doctoral student, Mary has already served as an invited cochair for a 2020 scientific session hosted by The Physiological Society (an international physiological society based in the United Kingdom) on the topic of physiology of obesity - her area of expertise. Mary already has experience obtaining independent, extramural funding for her research ideas - something very rare for someone at her level. Her dissertation work examining the role of mitochondrial function, mitophagy, and dynamics in the pathophysiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in BOTH human and animal models highlight some of her "out-of-the-box" thinking, as well as her impressive work ethic and skill set. As a result, this independent line of work has led to invited talks, presentation awards, and post-doctoral fellowship opportunities. Mary has been a model graduate student throughout her time at Mizzou and is a role model for all who join the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. #mizzounep #mizzouhes #mizzou Mizzou Department of Nutrition & Exercise Physiology Mizzou
