We are 5 days away from the International Day of the Midwife 2021. In my experience, most midwives do not desire to shine the spotlight on themselves. We usually want to focus on the families we work with, on the beauty and strength of birthing people. Perhaps we even want to draw attention to broken systems, ways to dismantle them and build new ones. This is all true of most midwives I know and work with. And in the coming days, I will absolutely share information along thes...e lines. However, I also want to shine some light on the midwives, the ones who stand by us, guiding and supporting, holding and protecting space. Midwives who often sacrifice sleep, comfort and time with their own families. The midwives who have bad backs and knees from the long hours, the ones who have sleepless nights at the side of a client, the ones with sore muscles and bruised hearts. No one, not a single person, becomes a midwife for fame, glory or money. We do it because we have heard a call, because we can't not.
