Chromebook or Laptop? I have fielded several questions about which to buy, and the answer differs based on your needs. The laptop is a full power computer, and will do everything any desktop will do and is portable. I will run all Microsoft based software (Office, QuickBooks, Adobe platforms, etc.) A Chromebook is basically a web browsing tool, it runs a version of Android OS just like a phone. It is even difficult to print directly from a Chromebook, you have to get a printer on the "certified" list. You can not load MS Office or most any other PC program, you are limited to what's located in the Google Play Store.
As we move into Cyber-Monday, you need to be aware scammers are ramping up their efforts to get to you. Facebook was flooded yesterday with a fake post from Aldi offering free groceries and a gift certificate it you replied or shared the post. As I have stated in numerous previous posts, these are usually an attempt to steal your personal information. Just replying or forwarding the post will let the scammer know you can be a target for future more detailed scam attempts. ... Even worse, some ask for what seems to be harmless personal information, but that can be used to access more personal data. So how do you know what's real? It's easy to verify some basic facts. 1. Does the offer also appear on the "official" company web page. (do not use any links in the post). 2. Is it the actual Facebook account of the business? Click on the Facebook name, it should have years worth of posts. Check the history of the account in "About", usually scam accounts will only be a few months old. 3. To make sure, contact the business using contact info OUTSIDE the suspect post. Never supply and personal information unless your are sure the links are valid. See more
Scam Alert!!!! Several versions of a fake Amazon Email is circulating. It looks very real, but links take you somewhere else to collect identity details. The subject line shows something similar to "Amazon sent you an Amazon Gift Card!" DO NOT CLICK on ANYTHING in that Email.
Lots of ads are popping up for internet devices offering to defeat the speed regulations from your internet provider and make your service faster. This is a conflict of terms, the device does not replace the hardware supplied by your provider, so it can't defeat any regulations placed on you. What most of these devices do is extend the range of your current wireless network. A low signal from your router can cause slower access, and these boosters can improve signal if ins...talled correctly. IF you need to boost the signal in some parts of your house or business, you need to actually have a site analysis to determine WHY you have low signal. In summary, very seldom can you ADD something to your network and make ti go faster. If you have questions about speeds or dead spots in your network, contact North Missouri IT Services for a site visit. See more
