#MissouriMonday Southwest Missouri along the Kansas border had been the area of struggle for years by May of 1863. The border war and the Civil War caused many ...residents on both sides to live in fear for nighttime brought raiders; Confederate or Union foraging parties, Jayhawkers, Bushwhackers, outlaws. On May 18th, soldiers from the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry, the first Black soldiers to experience combat of the war, and a few mounted men from the Second Kansas Battery, were sent to forage for food and resupply their outpost in Baxter Springs, KS. They stacked their arms at the Rader (or 'Reeder') farm near the town of Sherwood, MO, to get what they could from the farm. Sherwood had been a base of operations for Confederate Major Livingston and his men, who were secretly nearby and launched an attack when the foraging party was at their most vulnerable. Though a desperate fight, the Union soldiers were routed. Eighteen soldiers were killed including a few Black soldiers who had tried to surrender but were murdered, though a few were taken captive alive. The exhausted survivors trickled into Baxter Springs. The next day, Union troops returned to Sherwood and evicted the 250 inhabitants and burned every building to the ground in retaliation. Sherwood was never rebuilt.
