PRESS RELEASE FROM THE NEWTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT - Tuesday, May 11, 2021 "On todays date shortly before noon Newton County Deputies attempted to contact an individual that was a suspect in a burglary as well as having warrants for his arrest. At that time an individual pointed a weapon at the officers and fled in a vehicle. A pursuit ensued that began in Newton County and proceeded south into McDonald County. The Missouri Highway Patrol deployed spike strips and mana...ged to flatten 2 of the suspects tires. The pursuit continued a short distance until the vehicle left the road into a field near Highway CC and Highway C. The suspect, a 26 year old W/M fired shots at Newton County Deputies. The Deputies returned fire and the engagement ended when the suspect was wounded. Medical aid was immediately administered to the suspect and he was transported by ambulance to a Joplin hospital. I have requested both the Joplin Police Department and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office to assist in the investigation of the incident . No more information is available at this time." - Sheriff Chris Jennings

JOPLIN CHRISTMAS PARADE CANCELLED Freeman Health System and the City of Joplin jointly decided Tuesday morning, Nov. 24, that it is in the best interest of public safety for the community to cancel this year’s Christmas parade. We are sad to cancel it, but feel citizens are being responsible in their actions by avoiding gathering due to the pandemic, said Paula F. Baker, Freeman president and chief executive officer. Those who regularly participated found it difficult to ...do so because their groups are not meeting. While coordinators are disappointed, they are looking forward to next year. We truly appreciate the staff members of Freeman who have worked on this project this year and in prior years, said Joplin Mayor Ryan Stanley. Their initiative to bring the parade to the public in such a challenging year demonstrates their commitment to bring a quality event to our citizens. "They share our community spirit, and it is our goal to partner again with Freeman Health System to have the parade next year. We are confident that with Freeman as the host, the parade will be a spectacular event that everyone can enjoy as we have in years past.
