We lost a great man last night -- a community treasure. My friend Marc Houseman had a gift for remembering. He soaked up the stories from museum visitors, researched everything from graves to ghosts, and made sure our children knew the value of that history. Marc was an educator. For almost 20 years, we worked together to create history features for children, teacher workshops and so much more. He was a great writer -- but an even better storyteller. He was a YES man -- always willing to tackle any project -- even storytime at the bookstore dressed as Benjamin Franklin. I will miss his optimism, his outlook on life, his laughter, his love for everyone and his vast knowledge. Sending up love to you Marc

Today's Holly Jolly Read! Anything author Mac Barnett touches is solid-gold. His newest, however, is all white, the tale of an artic animal and his adventures in the snow-covered landscape he calls home. A Polar Bear in the Snow, with illustrations by Shawn Harris, is told in simple text with few words per page, it begins: There is a polar bear in the snow. Yet the spread shows nothing because the bear blends in. The following page reveals a bit morethe bear’s black mo...uth and nose peeking out. Soon the entire bear springs to life, the polar bear off on a journey where he’ll meet other artic animals, and a human too. Though this clever book is set in a cold climate, it’s sure to warm readers’ hearts. Pick up a copy at Neighborhood Reads or online: https://tinyurl.com/y95fmtcs See more

Author/illustrator Sophie Blackall celebrates the marvelous orb we call home in If You Come to Earth, a picture book with award-worthy illustrations and spare, meaningful text. Blackall presents a description of what a Visitor From Outer Space can expect when dropping in on Earth, showing our planet’s position, then zeroing in on where we live, all aspects of our lives, depicting our differences and our universality. The beauty of this excellent book shines in the care and detail Blackall lavishes on each pageshowing animals that roam the earth, as well as birds, and our life experiences too, important and insignificant, planned and unforeseen. Comprehensive in its breadth, Blackall concludes with a wise message in a book that’s a true treasure. Pick up a copy of this book in the bookstore!

Leave it up to Jimmy Fallon to leave us laughinghe does just that with his new picture book, 5 More Sleeps ‘Til Christmas, a jolly-good read in verse. Adults and kids will identify with the main character, a little boy sorely wishing for the big day to arrive, his anticipation almost palpable. He’s sure Santa will come through for him: 5 more sleeps ‘til Christmas. I’m not sure I can wait. I got good grades, I fed the dog, I even cleared my plate. The antics of the bi...g-eyed, be-speckled boy grow more frenzied as he counts down the days, his faithful dog by his side. Seasonal illustrations by Rich Deas jubilantly bring Fallon’s story to life, a final rib-tickler at the end a fitting conclusion to a book that’s sure to be a holiday favorite for years to come. Watch Santa and Mrs. Claus read this book here:https://www.facebook.com/NeighborhoodReads/videos/193985839069331 Pick up a copy in the bookstore by Dec. 20 to start reading at "5 More Sleeps "Til Christmas!" Today's Holly Jolly Read! Our connectedness is the backbone of What We’ll Build: Plans for our Future Together, by author/illustrator Oliver Jeffers. For his newest gift to the world, Jeffers tells the story of a father and daughter, a blonde tyke walking hand-in-hand with her dad as he imagines their future. To build you’ve got to have tools; this dad is at the ready, laying out hammer, nails and saw to construct their home. It’s a place of love and fun, and a structure of... safety that the dad turns into a castle in his imagination, surrounded by a wall. The pair doesn’t stop once their home/castle is finished, next up is a tower and a tunnel and a road up to the moon. Adventures abound in this charming tale as dad and daughter visualize their futuretogether. Pick up a copy at Neighborhood Reads or online at: https://tinyurl.com/yc8967yd See more

Holly Jolly Read #15 Santa toils day and night to make sure girls and boys get the toys they want most on Christmas morning. The Jolly Old Elf’s got a heavy workload, that’s for sure, but he throws himself into his tasks with good-natured gusto. Santa’s goodwill mission is laughingly told in Santa Claus, the World’s Number One Toy Expert, another winner from illustrator/writer Marla Frazee. The perfect personal shopper with a heart of gold, that’s Santa. He gets his hints from whispers children deliver in his ear, and then his work begins. And he’s right 99.9% of the time. Here’s a paperback that continues to be a Christmas favorite. Pick up a copy of this perennial favorite at Neighborhood Reads or here: https://tinyurl.com/ydebrv4k
