Namaste Nepal At Truman State 12.11.2020

Today marked the beginning of Dashain - the national festival of Nepal. The first day of the festival today, Ghatastapana (which literally means placing a pot) is the day when people fill Kalash (pot) with holy water and sow barley seeds. Then the Kalash is put in the center of a rectangular sand block. The priest then asks Goddess Durga (one of the most powerful deities in Hinduism) to reside in the Kalash. On the tenth day of Dashain, which is ‘Tika’, the jamara (long yel...low grass that sprouts from the seeds) is offered to family members asking Goddess Durga to bless everyone in the family. This is the most important time of the year for Nepalese in religious context. Families come together and celebrate with a number of worships and great feasts. Children love this time of the year. They gather with their friends, fly kites, play swings, and have the most wonderful time. We all Nepalese have grown up with a fond love for the festival for it reminds us of our childhood days. So, on this auspicious occasion of Dashain, we wish every one a happy, wealthy, and prosperous life. May Goddess Durga bless all of us! #happydashain

Today is the fifth and the last day of Tihar which is known as Bhai Tika. It is celebrated by sisters putting seven color Tika on the forehead of their brothers to ensure long life and thank them for providing protection. Sisters also make garland for their flowers from a flower, usually marigold. In return, brothers offer gifts and money to their sisters. It is a very important day for all as family members gather together, enjoy delicious foods and celebrate Tihar. Thank you to our lovely member Kabita Chhetri for this beautiful photo.

In the evening, the Laxmi, goddess of wealth is worshipped and thanked with oil lamps or candles on doorways and windows. It is a really beautiful evening as small girls visit their neighbors houses where they sing and play musical instruments which is known as Bhailo.
