Be a Beacon of Light when the Sky goes Dark! Most of you may already know that I specialize at working with Senior Citizens as a Financial Advisor & Health Ins...urance Broker. I have hundreds if not thousands of relationships with people that I care about and they may be at risk. I just got off the phone with a client that has lost both parents within several hours and I’m preparing to go see another whose mom recently passed away. Fortunately these were not as a result of the coronavirus. However the loss of a loved one is tragic and anything that you and I can do to prevent just 1 loss of life is well worth the effort. So if being inconvenienced over the short term is something that I must endure for the greater good then sign me up. Now is a perfect opportunity for me to share a few tips on how you might not only be able to assist a senior now but may also be helpful when this all blows over. Because we know it eventually will. 1. Make a phone call that you may not ordinarily consider doing. Call a parent, elderly neighbor or acquaintance from church or work. 2. Offer suggestions on why staying at home or reducing activity might be a good idea at this time. Possibly missing church or rescheduling elective or preventive medical or dental appointments may also be options. 3. Offer to run an errand or pick up supplies or medications. 4. Perhaps putting in a supply or grocery order online for them. Not everyone is familiar with the process. 5. Let someone know that it will be ok, that you have their back and they are not alone. Be aware that older people get lonely! Especially when they are widowed or don’t have family close to them. They can become depressed and afraid.... and most importantly YES ... you can make a difference. So be wise, be prepared and be compassionate! Because I have a feeling the world is going to need a little more of these things! As a professional we will be taking preventive measures with our business practices to include the following. 1. Our staff has been and is encouraged to work remotely at home. 2. The office is sanitized several times per day. 3. Everyone’s temperature is checked every 4 hours. 4. Keeping safe distances & no handshaking. 5. We are encouraging that business with customers be conducted by phone, fax and email when possible. 6. We have voluntarily suspended all client reviews with anyone living in a nursing home, assisted living or senior community. 7. We are suspending all air travel until further notice. 8. All dinner seminars & client workshops will be put on hold until further notice. 9. Advisors will wash hands before and after any in home reviews. 10. Clients will be encouraged to use their own pen. Although some of these actions may seem excessive we believe that to error on the side of caution my prove to be prudent.
