MU Veterinary Neurology 18.11.2020

KC, a 5-month-old foster dog from Mission, Kansas, was roughhousing with her housemate on Nov. 21, when a mid-air collision fractured her second cervical verteb...rae. On. Nov. 27, her shelter volunteer brought her to the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center for treatment. By the time she arrived, she was unable to walk at all, couldn’t move her front or hind limbs, and was in a severe pain. VHC veterinarians David Hutcheson, DVM, DACVS-Small Animal, an assistant teaching professor in the Small Animal Surgery Service, and Ji-Hey Lim, DVM, PhD, a clinical instructor in the Neurology and Neurosurgery Service, collaborated to treat KC's fractured vertebrae.Hutcheson and Lim repositioned KC’s C2 vertebrae and stabilize her neck with eight screws and bone cement. Five days post-surgery, KC was once again able to walk unassisted and return home! See more

Everyone meet our buddy Sarge! Sarge was recently adopted and had a previous spinal injury that became worse after adoption. He had surgery with our neurologists and underwent a couple of weeks of physical rehabilitation before going home yesterday. Everyone here fell in love with Sarge and we are wishing him all the best!

http://navc.com/navc-conference-speaker-spotlight-stephani/ A pretty cool little "speaker spotlight" on one of our technologists, Stephanie Gilliam. Stephanie will be lecturing at the NAVC conference in Orlando in February 2017. Make sure to stop by and say hi if you are there!

Charlie recovered so well from surgery that she was able to begin physical therapy with our rehabilitation practitioner Stephanie Gilliam just 12 days later. Look how well she could walk in the underwater treadmill!

Meet our friend Charlie! Charlie presented to the Neurology Service at the University of Missouri VHC after being hit by a car. She was evaluated with her regular veterinarian and radiographs showed a luxation of her L7 vertebral body and a fracture of L6. Due to the fact that Charlie was still able to move her back legs (which is very uncommon for a lesion this severe) she was referred to the Neurology Service for further evaluation. Upon arrival at the VHC, Charlie was imme...diately secured to a board so that she wasn’t able to move her spine. Charlie was evaluated by Dr. Carpentier and it was confirmed that Charlie was able to move her back legs and further diagnostics were recommended. A full body CT was performed to make sure that there was no other injuries. The CT showed mild contusions in her lungs, and confirmed that the L6 fracture and L7 luxation were the only abnormalities with the vertebral column. Charlie underwent surgery with Drs. Tomlinson, McCally and Carpentier to stabilize her spine. As you can see from the before and after X-rays here surgery was a success! We will post more updates about Charlie's recovery soon!
