Tuesday morning kids got some sparring work in last week.

White belts understand that WE understand although you are white belts on the mats, you may be an absolute expert in your chosen field. I look at my students and understand I am not above them, I simply have more mat knowledge. You are just as important as anyone else on those mats.

Couple of photos from today’s testing. For the safety of our students and families we will be testing by family as the students are ready. Today the Leas family tested. Chloe and Davis both passed their red belt test and we are excited as they take this next step toward black belt. Well done Chloe and Davis. We are so proud of you.

Someone is excited about their new rank!! Learning a martial art during a pandemic is tricky. Luckily we have amazing students and families that persevere. These two red belts have been helping teach their little brother at home so he would be ready to test with them. They even have taught a group class in person. They are showing true signs of leadership. We are so proud of their growth!

It was great to have Mr Jesse back in class today. Upper ranks working hard on advanced kicks and The Wild Child keeping you pretty well. The photos are blurry because they are Live Photo and they don’t transfer well to Facebook.

Congratulations to Mariah as she earned her second red stripe. She’s been taking virtual classes several times a week since March and been assisting us in teaching virtually as well. Today she came to the school for class and an assessment. Her progress was evident. She did outstanding. I look forward to wrapping a red belt around her waist very soon.

An example of Student growth and development: when you get a message from a student requesting to hold off on their stripe assessment for a bit because they aren’t feeling like they have been doing their best. Asking to practice a bit more instead because they know they can do better and give it more than they have been. Mind you the stripe assessment for this young lady would bring the ability to test and move to the next belt. And be at the same level as a sibling and one o...f the highest rank students in the school. She could pass the test easily. Not necessarily the strongest or highest score but it would Pass. But she doesn’t just want to pass. She wants to feel confident in her ability and believe in herself. That is growth and development. The student recognizing that they can and should do better before advancing. As an instructor part of me wants to say you’re fine let’s assess so they can move forward and learn new stuff and we can keep honing those other skills. The other part of me is immensely proud of the student for asking for what they need and being determined to do their best and knowing they can do better. Many kids, and adults even, chase rank. They are just looking to get to black belt and check off boxes. Not this young lady. She’s determined to do it and do it well. No matter how long it takes. She’s definitely shown integrity and perseverance, two of the parts of a true martial artist. Can’t wait to see her grow even more. See more

We are trying something new this week and hope to continue through August. Ms Carrie has been teaching virtual morning classes since March and in June we added in oerson classes back for those that were ready to be back in the building. June and July were tricky trying to find a balance while teaching virtually and in person at the same time. So yesterday and going forward for August two mornings a week a virtual class will follow the live class. We appreciate your patience while we work out options that will help support as many students as possible. Feel free to come in person if you can or join us virtually at 11 am. Virtual days will vary but times will be posted.
