Montgomery Firefighters responded to a call of a semi truck on fire a few minutes before 2am this morning at the eastbound rest area. Upon arrival firefighters found the truck and trailer fully engulfed. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. We are thankful the driver noticed his tire on fire early enough to safely exit the interstate and get out of the vehicle to a safe distance.

Montgomery Fire with the assistance of New Florence Fire extinguished a residential structure fire to the basement of a home on South Walker Street this morning. Thanks to Montgomery County Ambulance and law enforcement for providing support to keep our staff safe. And to Ameren and Montgomery City Public Works for getting utilities shut down. Fire damage was contained to the basement with smoke damage to the upper stories.

Please keep in mind that dry grasses and windy weather make for favorable conditions for a controlled burn to spread. If you must burn plan ahead and do so safely. Firefighters are currently responding to a natural cover fire in the median. This is obviously an accidental start, so keep in mind how I’m easy it would be for your controlled burn to become a problem. Stay safe!

If you were driving through the 4 way in Montgomery early this morning you might have noticed someone lost part of their vehicle. One of our firefighters drove up on this backend of a semi trailer that had detached and fallen in the roadway. Luckily it was moving slow and thus did not cause any injury or damage to anyone else’s vehicle. Some locals assisted in chaining it up and pulling it to the side of the toad to clear the highway for traffic. Happy Friday! Stay safe! PS the fire department will be open for Halloween with our normal hot dogs, hot chocolate, and candy. We can’t wait to see what you dress up as this year!

Firefighters were called to a smoke filled home this afternoon. Firefighters searched the residence and we were happy to discover the home was not on fire but the furnace was smoking a bit. The furnace was cooled and shut down until it could be serviced by a technician. Firefighters opened the windows and set up fans to clear out the smoke for the resident and returned to service. This kind of thing happens often in the fall when our furnaces have been sitting dormant for the summer. Some of our staff participated in a live burn today. Firefighters learned about setting back burns to help control spread, techniques for suppression along the edges, and had the chance to observe fire growth and spread.

Firefighters gathered for training tonight on relay pumping. We simulated a situation we might find in a rural area such that we are unable to get all the fire trucks near a fire. In that situation we would use large diameter hose and at least one extra fire engine to pump water up to the fire scene. We were happy to have Wellsville Fire, New Florence Fire, Big Spring Fire, and Jonesburg Fire join us tonight. New Florence Fire Protection District Jonesburg-High Hill Fire Protection Dist. Firefighters were paged early this morning to a structure fire with flames showing at the apartments on Chestnut Street. Upon arrival a large part of the second story was found to be involved with heavy flames and smoke coming from the back wall and attic space of both upper apartments. One apartment had not been cleared upon arrival. All occupants were able to evacuate with no injury. Firefighters were able to rescue a small dog and pet flying squirrel from that residence. F...ire attack began with the fire being quickly knocked down. Salvage and overhaul began, firefighters were able to remove many important items from the first floor apartments with little to no damage. We would like to thank all that assisted with fire attack, communications, scene security, medical standby, delivery of food and drinks, & utilities being shut down.
