Reed was one of two slaves manumitted by General John Fremont on September 12, 1861, contravening orders of the Lincoln Administration. Hiram moved to Nantucket, Massachusetts where he joined the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry. He died there in 1911. He was honored on April 18, 2019 by a ceremony at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis.
