GIVING TUESDAY is upon us! It has been a tough year for everyone especially those of us that thrive on serving the people in our communities through free public access to cultural experiences and adventures. Private giving is essential to the MoA's ability to succeed and provide for a future furthering our mission through research, interpretation, and preservation of ethnographic and archaeological materials. This Giving Tuesday and all through the month of December, is a t...ime to donate to the MoA so that we can start 2021 with a bang -even if it's just the cost of a coffee. No amount is too small. Monetary donations via cash or check may be made in person by being placed in the donation box inside the museum (Mizzou North, 2nd Floor East Wing). But you can also safely donate remotely via credit or debit card through MU's Giving page. Please be sure to click OTHER when you "Choose your funds" and note that the donation is for the "Museum of ANTHROPOLOGY" in the Gift Instructions box. There are several museums at Mizzou making sure you put ANTHROPOLOGY ensures that the donations find their way to the MoA. We count our blessings that we have so many people who love and support our museum. Here's to a better 2021 and peace and health to all! See more

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!

This composite pellet bow is made by the Ju Yuan Hao bowmakers in Beijing. It has reflexed limbs with recurved tips and a bamboo core. The sinew back is covered with birch bark and decorated with painted dragons and bats. Cork covers the handle and sharkskin is wrapped above and below the grip. One nock is walrus ivory and the other is black horn. This pellet bow uses carved bamboo in place of a bowstring. MAC#2004-01-010 Beijing, China 2003 Bamboo, horn, sinew, sharkski...n, cork, ivory, horn . Pellet bows shoot small clay pellets or round stones that are loaded into a pouch attached between a double bow string and fired much like a sling shot. Lacking the power of conventional bows, they were often used for hunting small game. Shooting a pellet bow isn’t as straightforward as you may think, however. With a bow and arrow, the arrow is naturally guided past the bow itself. A pellet bow, on the other hand, needs to be rotated outwards to prevent the pellet from striking the bow or the hand. Several examples in the Grayson Archery collection have grip attachments to help protect the hand from any pellet firing mishaps. . #pelletbowseries #smallgamehunting #moamizzou #graysonarcherycollection #huntingseason #muaands #mizzou See more
