Delta Gamma at Mizzou, Mu Chapter 29.11.2020

The impacts that microaggressions have are anything but small. And as sisters who come together in the name of "Doing Good" and social responsibility, it's on u...s to talk about them. Join us on Wednesday, June 10, for an Article II Talk on the Impacts of Microaggressions. Register here: https://bit.ly/2AhTP6q Our sisterhood comes in many shades, complexions and identities. Let’s spend some time hearing from some of our sisters of color, some of whom found their home in Delta Gamma a few years ago, others a couple decades. They’ll share the impact that white privilege and microaggressions that they have experienced have had on both their lives and sorority experience, and provide their thoughts on how both Delta Gamma and individual sisters can prioritize advocacy and actively celebrate the various identities that make up our sisterhood. Within Delta Gamma, we want to make it a priority to listen to and amplify the voices of people of color, so that all types of Delta Gamma stories are told! We are thankful that these members are open to having this discussion within our sisterhood, and we will not be censoring the stories and perspectives they decide to share, even if they do not portray Delta Gamma in the best light. We acknowledge that there is much progress to be made, and are committed to creating an ongoing environment of inclusion and respect. Please note that it is not the responsibility of people of color to educate white individuals on the topic of white privilege, simply because they are people of color! While these sisters have expressed their interest in being part of this conversation, that does NOT mean that all members who are minorities feel comfortable doing the same, nor is it their responsibility to.

The sisters of Delta Gamma Fraternity live by our purposes as stated in Article II of the Fraternity Constitution: The objects of this Fraternity shall be to... foster high ideals of friendship among women, to promote their educational and cultural interests, to create in them a true sense of social responsibility, and to develop in them the best qualities of character. Through the lens of doing good and our charge of social responsibility, we cannot stand silently by as members of our community, our world and our sisterhood are impacted by the violence against minorities, specifically African Americans. Racism, needless violence, ignorance and abuse of power are diametrically opposed to what we stand for as Delta Gammas and shall not be tolerated. We always expect that our members and anyone associated with Delta Gamma Fraternity show the best qualities of character by being inclusive, fair and supportive. To our black sisters and friends of the anchor, we see you. We are in pain for you and alongside you during this trying time in our country. "Having been founded upon the principles of personal integrity, true friendship, and social responsibility, I know that I speak on behalf of the Fraternity Council and all of my Delta Gamma sisters when I condemn any and all acts and expressions of racism, bigotry, and hate. Our expectation of our members is that they embrace all citizens of our global community with respect, good will, and kindness. Abuses of power, flagrant violence, and preying on others based upon racial hatred are appalling acts, and have no place in a civilized, hopeful world." ~ Wilma Johnson Wilbanks, International President of Delta Gamma Fraternity See more
