Missouri Wildflowers Nursery 13.01.2022

I have about two more weeks before having to choose a picture for the 2022 Missouri Wildflower Nursery catalog cover. This isn't necessarily the one. It's jus...t the only one I took that looked like it could be on the cover. It was taken at Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center in late May while waiting for customers to pick up pre orders. I'm sure Firehouse Design Studio, Inc. can make this one look better as a cover, or possibly one of yours. I think I want a picture on the cover that depicts a native plant garden or part of a garden. A picture of a single native plant could work, but I think I want to stay away from closeups of pollinators on just a flower or two, but pollinators or other wildlife in the picture are good, hopefully. If you want to submit a picture for consideration, you can post it here or one of the other two places that I share this post to. PLEASE DON'T SHARE THIS POST. I have my Messenger running again, so you can send it in a private message, but posting it here lets others see it. I'll contact a few of you through Messenger to get some details.

I collected acorns from this blackjack oak tree (Quercus marilandica) today in hopes of making it available within the next couple of years. This article has a ...good description of the species. Might be a hard sell, but I think it could be a good landscape species. http://ctufc.org/news/blackjack-oak-tree/

It’s about that time of year again when I begin to see people sharing photos of their beautiful native beauty berries, Callicarpa americana, but quite often it’...s actually a picture of an exotic Asian beauty berry. Where I work in urban St. Louis, these exotic ones are now showing up in our woodland edges. We really needed another invasive shrub . Unfortunately, the nursery industry isn’t helping, as the Asian species are consistently being sold to the general public as the native species. The easiest time to tell the species a part from one another is right now, by looking at the fruit arrangement, as shown here in the first photo. Callicarpa americana fruits are in larger clusters tightly attached to the stem, and the Asian species fruit clusters are looser and attached on longer peduncles, putting the berries farther from the stem. C. americana is also a much larger shrub overall at maturity, has a looser branching habit, and much larger leaves than the Asian species that are commercially available. Photo 1. Fruit clusters along stem side by side comparison, Callicarpa americana on the left. 2. C. americana leaf size 3. Callicarpa dichotoma leaf size 4. & 5. stem comparisons 6. & 7. size, shape and branching habit comparisons 8. C. americana native range map EDIT- 9. Relabeled Photo 1 for ease of explanation.

I have a row of seven red buckeyes in the front yard for seed production and as hummingbird feeders. These pictures taken on April 4 indicate the genetic diver...sity and value of planting the straight species grown from seeds instead of using clones of one plant (cultivars). The flowering season is extended at least a week or more, because of the variation within these seven plants. The hummingbirds benefit a lot from this diversity in our yard. See more

FYI: 1) Please order by calling 573-496-3492 or go through the motions at mowildflowers.net where you can order and pay online. Thanks! 2) When browsing our website, it can appear at first glance that a lot of our plants are out of stock. Here is a link to our current availability. It gets updated fairly often throughout the month (but its accuracy can't be 100% guaranteed--we don't use bar codes, and have to keep track of things the best we can by going out and counting pots). Depending on your browser and settings, it will either open in a new window or download as an Excel spreadsheet: http://mowildflowers.net//Misc%20plant%2/WEB%20SPREAD.xlsx

This is a Dieunomia Heteropoda in the family Halictidae (you remember there are 7 families of bees and 6 of them in the USA). well, this Halictidae is only foun...d in South and North America. It is a sunflower specialist (commonly named sunflower Nomia). I find them here during the first two weeks of September, always at the same spot within 50 yards. I don't see them prior September 1st and beyond September 15th, so i look for them right now and right now only, so far they have been at the rendez-vous. See more

With native plants growing in your garden, you create beauty and attract a plethora of entertaining creatures to your landscape. You are working with nature att...racting both predator and prey to help keep everything in balance. Pesky bugs rarely occur in numbers to damage your prized plants, because other predatory and beneficial insects (and other wildlife like hungry birds) are also present! This can reduce and even eliminate the need for pesticides. Maybe you should heed the call and preorder some native plants for delivery next weekend! Check Missouri Wildflowers Nursery and Ozark Soul Native Plants for availability. See more
