I took a 3yo stud in for a dental today. I've got 12 rides on him and as I was starting ask for more, as we do in training, he'd pop his head up when I lifted t...he left rein. The last two sessions with him he's started to drool long slimy drool, not the good foamy kind. I was anticipating a few sharp points. Here is what we found. Major ulcerations along the side of his mouth on both sides. I have indicated with an arrow in first picture. A large ulceration on the side of his tongue. Then, after pulling one of his loose caps, Dr Heather Carlisle discovered a worm infestation, if you will, underneath. Thanks to Dr. Carlisle, he's all fixed up now. I can't emphasize enough the importance of dental care in our horses-even at the age of 2! I used to be a real stickler about it for anything that came in to training and I started to let it slide. This horse has had all of his regular cares, he came from a clean facility in good body condition. I would have never known anything was wrong. This horse should have killed me. He should have at some point, reared and flipped over with me. He should have never passed the ground work phase. It says so much about his disposition and willing, compliant demeanor that we've made it this far into his basic training. I can't wait to see his improvement in the next few weeks. See more
