One reality of the coronavirus outbreak is that the mortality rate for those over 80 who contract it is 1 in 6. Our older populations have very weak immune sys...tems. If you are under 50, the likelihood you will die from the disease is extremely remote unless you have serious underlying health concerns. Your immune system is stronger than you think. There are steps we can take to protect our most vulnerable communities. When people hoard soup, toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer and other items, they may be preventing an elderly person or other at-risk people from having access to those things. And it is not just the elderly. Your friend who has cancer? They're at a much higher risk. Kidney or other disease? Surgery in last 6 months? All have greater risk of mortality from decreased immune systems. In addition, most of our communities have Meals on Wheels. This service will become very critical to ensuring our shut-in seniors and the disabled have proper diets. Older folks may be told not to leave their homes and may sign up for Meals on Wheels for the first time in their lives. The system could easily be strained. If you have a Meals on Wheels in your community, now is the time to donate funds to help them meet the increased demand that is coming. Most meals are generally delivered by people who are older and retired--in other words, at-risk people. You can also volunteer to deliver meals. More cooks will also be required. We need to care for one another. Check on your elderly neighbor regularly. Ask them if you can pick some things up at the grocery store for them. One more thing, if you have not done so, now is the time to donate blood. Stockpiles of blood in New York and other high density areas affected by coronavirus are at critical levels. Get ahead of the crisis in your community by being proactive. And let's have patience with one another and show greater kindness and love to one another. Thanks for listening, Dwight See more
