Several weeks ago a Jefferson City police officer was in a confrontation with a suspect. During that encounter the officer was shot twice at point-blank range.... Luckily he was wearing a ballistics vest and survived the shooting. One of the bullets - while not penetrating the protective vest - caused substantial tissue and muscle damage to the officer. However the other bullet, just several inches away, caused hardly any damage at all. The difference between the two shots? The second one went through a St. Michael the Archangel medal the officer had in his vest. And where did this officer get the medal? A few years back the Helias Catholic baseball team under the direction of Coach Wyrick, bought a bunch of them, had them blessed, and gave them to all members of the JCPD. This officer, who is not Catholic, put the medal in his vest...and it certainly made a difference on that fateful night. I tell this story to remind everyone that - while it may seem that our school (and all schools, for that matter) are overly focused on sports (and we often are!) - there is indeed much more that happens in the formation of the athletes who participate in our sports programs.
