Homer Gilliam Phillips (18781931) was a prominent attorney in St. Louis, MO, who fought for African Americans to have equal access to proper health care. He is widely known as a political figure and civil rights activist in St. Louis and as the namesake of Homer G. Phillips Hospital. Phillips was born in Pettis County, Missouri. The son of a minister and former slave, he was orphaned in childhood and raised by his aunt. Phillips was able to obtain an education that culmina...ted at Howard University Law School in Washington, DC. After graduating from Howard, Phillips returned to Missouri and established a thriving law practice in St. Louis He was married to Ida Perle Alexander, an actress. As an activist, he secured $1 million in bonds to construct a new hospital for African Americans on the city's north side. Unfortunately, Phillips was murdered in 1931 and never lived to see his dream of a hospital come to reality; the suspects in his murder were acquitted and the case remains unsolved. Homer G. Phillips Hospital (1937-1979) opened six years after the murder of its advocate, and became one of the few nationally-recognized, fully-equipped hospitals in the country where black doctors, nurses, and technicians could receive training. The hospital was built to serve the needs of more than 70,000 local African Americans. In less than a decade, Homer G. Phillips Hospital ranked in the upper third of the ten largest general hospitals in the country and gained a national reputation for treatment of the acutely injured. Homer G. Phillips was a tireless crusader for civil rights and the interests of the African American citizens of St. Louis. The hospital that bore his name stood as a testament to the high esteem in which he was held. #blackhistory #saintlouis #MedicalPioneers #medstar #homehealthcare Contact us for all your home health care needs.
