This week, workers uncovered a sign from the past on the side of the former McGinty's Department Store on the SW corner of the Neosho Square. A photo of that wi...ll appear in our Tuesday edition but the discovery has brought back memories for many local residents. First opened at McGinty Brothers Department Store in the early 1900's, the store became Neosho's largest and oldest department store for many years. A.C. McGinty founded the store with brother. His son Hale returned from serving in the US Army in the Philippines during World War II to work in the store. The store passed out of McGinty family hands in 1991 but continued to operate until 2001. Today, the building is under renovation and this week many remember the store. For those who might have wondered, Hale McGinty Drive (in the Neosho Middle School area) is named for Hale Mc Ginty who in addition to being a fine local businesses also served on the Neosho School Board for 18 years, 11 as president and was an active community participant. He died at the age of 92 in 2011. Our photos show Hale and his father, store founder A.C. Mc Ginty at the store, two vintage views of the story, a newspaper page detailing a fire that devastated the building in 1949 (but it returned!) and Hale's 90th birthday.
