October 13 is an eventful date in Nazarene history. On this day in 1895, a band of Wesleyan-holiness people who had gathered in Los Angeles to organize a new ch...urch body adopted the name "Church of the Nazarene." A week earlier, they had met and agreed to establish a new church. Now they were meeting again to organize more thoroughly. According to H. Orton Wiley, several names were suggested and most had the word "Methodist" in the title. But Dr. J. P. Widney told the people that he had spent the night in prayer and that "Church of the Nazarene" had come to him in the night. He argued that the name would identify the new church as one that intended to be in solidarity with the "lowly toiling masses" who looked to Jesus of Nazareth as their savior. The people accepted his suggestion and went forward under that name. On this same date in 1908, the climactic moment occurred at the Second General Assembly when the merger of the Holiness Church of Christ with the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene was effected at 10:40 in the morning. After several days of meeting in Pilot Point, Texas, delegates of the two church bodies had resolved the few remaining issues between them. Carl Bangs notes that Bresee "had exerted continual influence on this outcome." C. B. Jernigan had done the same from the Holiness Church of Christ side. R. B. Mitchum, president of the Holiness Church of Christ, made the motion to consummate the union, and C. W. Ruth seconded it. Others spoke in favor, and the merger was completed by a unanimous rising vote. The minutes of the Second General Assembly state that great joy filled the place, and eventually the crowd spilled out of the large tent under which they were meeting. All those present then participated in a "Hallelujah March" around the tent. After a few minutes, Bresee mounted a bench and addressed the crowd. In the 1950s, when Timothy Smith was researching his book "Called Unto Holiness," he solicited descriptions of this event from several people still living then who had been at Pilot Point. Their descriptions all emphasize the great joy that was experienced as southerners and northerners embraced one another. The founders did not view this as a birth date. Rather, they viewed it as "a great spiritual marriage" and the creation of a wider family. It was a time when three streams of the river of life--one from the Atlantic, one from the Pacific, and one from the Gulf of Mexico--joined and flowed together thereafter. One photograph captures the iconic scene at Pilot Point during the Hallelujah March. Another shares the words of a song written for the occasion by evangelists L. Milton Williams and Isaiah Martin.

General Superintendent Gustavo Crocker shares, "As we face this triple storm in the world the storm of a global pandemic, the storm of economic recession, and... the storm of social and ethnic tensions in our communities our prayer is, first, that we will be reminded of our calling. Our calling to go with Jesus. We are not called to go alone. He is with us!" See more

*STATEMENT ON THE 30TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY* The Board of General Superintendents has determined that current global conditions, including health risks, restricted ...mobility, and lack of financial resources, create limitations for a truly global representation to attend the General Assembly as scheduled in 2021. As many of us are isolated in our homes, General Superintendent Gustavo Crocker reminds us that the peace of the Lord is bigger than any human sense of security. The Lord interrupts our sense of security with a unique eternal sense of peace.
