Lone Pine Recycling Center 11.11.2020

ATTENTION RECYCLERS! As many of you may know, all City recycling sites will reopen under normal operating hours beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, May 6. We encoura...ge all recyclers to reference this map to ensure you recycle at the nearest center to you. Lone Pine is traditionally our busiest center, so in order to help ensure traffic flows, please visit our Franklin Avenue or Yardwaste Recycling Centers if you are nearer to them. All buildings and bathroom facilities at these sites will remain closed and all patrons are encouraged to follow CDC physical distancing guidelines. In addition, visitors are asked to follow the following guidelines: Use recycling bins one person at a time Limit the number of family members visiting the facility and have only one person exit the vehicle. Be prepared with all recyclables properly broken down and ready for deposit in a bin Avoid socializing or lingering at these facilities Thank you for your patience and continued support as we remain mindful of the safety of our visitors and staff! Thanks to Jenifer Abreu for the recent opportunity to discuss the current center closures and plans for the upcoming 50th Earth Day. In response to the decisio...n to close the centers, Erick Roberts, Superintendent of Solid Waste, shared that although activities at those centers are outside and people think they can maintain social distancing; we receive hundreds and sometimes over a thousand visits a day. We appreciate that, but as they (customers) cycle through there, they are visiting the same spots repeatedly. Continuing, that it was difficult to remain open "in a way that was protective of our citizens and our staff." This is why we encourage residents to contact their trash haulers about curbside recycling options and, if possible, store recyclables until the centers reopen. Despite our recycling center closures and "stay-at-home" orders, we do want to encourage people to appreciate the environment they are in and in the safest way possible. One way to do that is to go outside and participate in your own natural space, for example, your backyard. For ideas on how to participate in Earth Day celebrations with SGF Environmental Services, be sure to follow us next week! #SGFRecycles #SustainableSGF

We want to remind people that, although the recycling centers may be closed, the landfill does not have to be the alternative. If possible, store your recyclabl...es until the centers are reopened, but if that is not a possibility, explore these options: *Check with trash haulers about curbside recycling pickup. *Use our Recycling & Donation Guide to help discover new alternative locations for a variety of materials; from common recyclables to yardwaste and more. Facilities included in this closure are the Yardwaste Recycling Center, Lone Pine Avenue Recycling Center, Franklin Avenue Recycling Center and Household Chemical Collection Cen...ter. We accept recycling at our three recycling centers, but we always love to remind people that REDUCING what they use and REUSING what they have should be conside...red before recycling. SOAP refill station is modeled with that specific concept in mind and we are happy to see that idea is not only being adopted by Springfield's citizens - but is now expanding to others! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
