It seems that #FLUORIDE is often a topic our families have questions about. Little Smiles of Washington follows guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Association for treatment with fluoride. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions: What is fluoride? "Fluoride is nature's cavity fighter and occurs naturally in varying amounts in water sources such as rivers, lakes and even the oceans. Fluoride is naturally present ...to some extent in certain foods and beverages but the levels vary widely." (www.ada.org) How does fluoride protect teeth? "Fluoride inhibits loss of minerals from tooth enamel and encourages remineralization (strengthening areas that are weakened and beginning to form cavities). Fluoride also affects bacteria that cause cavities, discouraging acid attacks that break down the tooth." (www.aapd.org) What is water fluoridation? "Community water fluoridation is simply the addition of fluoride to drinking water to increase the natural fluoride level up to the recommended level that helps prevent cavities." (www.ada.org) Washington's water supply is NOT fluoridated, along with a large portion of Franklin County. Should my child be using a fluoride toothpaste? Yes. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on your child's toothpaste. From the time your child's first tooth erupts until age 2, use a smear of fluoride toothpaste (think the size of a grain of rice) and brush twice daily. Parents can increase the amount of toothpaste to a pea-sized amount after age 2. If you have questions about fluoride, feel free to ask Dr. Corey at your next visit! @littlesmilesofwashington #fluoride #smile #oralhealth #kidsdentist #pediatricdentist #happykids #happyteeth #washingtonmissouri
