WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, effective from 9:00 PM tonight through noon tomorrow (01/01/2021), for Lincoln and many of our neighboring counties. Freezing rain with ice accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch can be expected. Current models show this beginning as light snow around midnight tonight, changing to light sleet around 2:00 AM then pretty quickly to freezing rain which should last through roughly 6:00 AM. Temperatures through this period look to be at or just below the freezing mark, so even a little difference may mean we see a rain/freezing rain mix, and by around 8:00 AM we should see just rain. Let’s be careful out there . . .

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE: I’d like to open by saying that, for all the media coverage (and yes, our coverage as well), this is not shaping up to be a major event. There are no winter weather-related warnings, watches, or advisories issued for us. Yet because of the timing, and the potential traffic/roadway issues, we’ll keep updates coming. With Round 1 (which for me consisted of a few barely visible snowflakes yesterday) behind us, Round 2 (today) looks like rain changing to... a rain/snow mix around 10:00 AM. We could see all snow by about 3:00 PM, with that ending sometime this evening. Total snow accumulations - if any - should remain less than an inch. The forecast for Round 3 (New Year’s Eve) shows it beginning as sleet about 9:00 PM, transitioning about 10:00 PM to a mix of rain and freezing rain. The freezing rain should come to an end very early in the morning on New Year’s Day, but rain will continue through the early morning hours. Ice accumulations - if any - are estimated at less than one-tenth of an inch. So let’s be careful out there . . .

WINTER WEATHER THIS WEEK: The National Weather Service is forecasting three separate rounds of winter precipitation this week. Round 1; this afternoon and this evening, a mix of snow (up to one-half inch) and ice (up to one-tenth of an inch) which should stay to our north and west . . . but not by much. Round 2; Wednesday evening and into the overnight hours, a dusting of snow and up to one-tenth of an inch of ice, which should stay to our south . . . but not by much.... Round 3; as rain moves back into the area Thursday evening, current models show it turning to freezing rain as it approaches I-70 and continues to move northward. Details are still coming into focus, but this may - may - impact us if the forecast holds. We’ll post any updates here (or on Nixle, if necessary) as they become available.

Our hearts go out to the people of Nashville, Tennessee this morning; targets of what law enforcement there is calling an intentional act. At roughly 6:30 AM, a vehicle (described in some reports as an RV) exploded in downtown Nashville. At least three persons have been injured and numerous buildings damaged (image courtesy of WKRN). Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, their loved ones, the City of Nashville, and our emergency response brothers and sisters as they treat the injured, protect others, bring order out of chaos, and start the process of bringing those responsible to justice.
