Received a heartbreaking text this morning from Doc Blue that at 4:30 am his wife Sherri passed away. Doc and Sherri have for the last decade been our admissi...on gate attendants for our camps in Branson. More importantly, they have become good friends. We should all strive to have the type of marriage that Doc and Sherri had. Doc is a strong Christian man and assures me his is ok. Still, this has to be tough. RIH Sherri and I rest assured that no one will get through those pearly gates without paying as long as you are in charge. See more

I originally wrote this profile on Vashon Coach Floyd Irons for the book Ball of Confusion: race, basketball and the chaos of 1972. It ended up on the editor’s cut floor not relevant enough for the narrative. However, I was told, this would make a great book on its own. I met Coach Irons in 2080 through former Mizzou All-American and NFL All-Pro Demetrious Johnson as I was writing the book Riding the Storm Out: a year of inner city high school football. Along with legendary Jefferson City High School football Coach Pete Atkins, Irons is the most successful and controversial coach in the history of Missouri high school sports. Give it a read.
