Unless it's pouring down rain in the morning, the April 24 Cabin Work Day will proceed. We'll just do clean-up inside until the rain passes and allows us to work outside. Work day will be 8 a.m. to noon - but people are welcome whenever it's convenient for them.
If you missed Kelly Johnston's entertaining and informative program at the LCHS meeting, here's another opportunity.
We could use some help. This is how the cabin fence is SUPPOSED to look. But currently it's covered in leaves and parts of it are deteriorating and falling down. We hope to clear some downed trees, pick up sticks and tackle this fence at a work day 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 24. We could sure use some help getting the cabin cleaned up and ready for visitors. Hope you can join us! The cabin is next to Jones Memorial at 11110 Lawrence 1137, Mt. Vernon. Message us here if you have any questions. THANK YOU!!! RAIN DATE MAY 1.
This is an original cabinet card from a Mt. Vernon, Missouri, photographer. It is now part of the collection at the Harold Bell Wright Museum in Pierce City, Mi...ssouri. Here is what Murray Bishoff has to say about it, "Yes, photo from the John W. Taylor family, one of the elders if the Disciples of Christ Church in Pierce City who recruited HBW to come to PC while he lived in Mt. Vernon. While the photo was widely used and distributed, we have the only copy from the original studio." See more
Work Day at Williams Cemetery. Saturday, May 1 @ 10:30. We need help cutting up fallen trees and straightening stones hit by fallen limbs
Work day at the Adamson Cabin Saturday, April 24, from 8 a.m. to noon, for any and all interested. We'll be working on the grounds and, if time and manpower permits, some cleanup inside the cabin. There's also some chainsaw work. Thanks for any help! We appreciate it!
Time to relax after a good morning's work at the Adamson Cabin. Thank you, MV Rotary and Historical Society volunteers! We'll try for more of the grounds work next Saturday, May 1, 8-noon.
It’s National Library Week, and all six of our statewide research centers are open by appointment. Can’t make it to one of our locations in person? We’d be happy to help you with your research needs! Make an appointment or request research services at shsmo.org/research/request
Cabin work day is still on this morning (Saturday, April 24), 8 a.m.-noon or whenever it clears. If it's raining, we'll work inside and won't need many people. If it clears, we'll work outside and need plenty of help, 11110 Lawrence 1137, Mt. Vernon. (If you have a battery-operated lantern or other light source, please bring it along. That loft is dark on cloudy days.)
Thinking about a work day at the Adamson Cabin Saturday morning, April 24, to get the grounds ready for mowing and do some cleanup inside the cabin. Might try to do something about that rail fence. Anyone interested?
Lawrence County Missouri Historical Society is seeking proposals for the repair/replacement of a deteriorating log in the exterior wall of the Adamson Cabin. Please contact Kathy Fairchild at [email protected] for additional information.
From the latest Lawrence County Historical Society Bulletin: High school and grades Miller, Missouri, 1924-25 - Christina Hadlock recently allowed us to copy something rarely encountered: A student body photo from nearly a century ago that includes the names. We have Christina's grandpa, Mancel Choate, and Mable Ruark Huff to thank. Many years ago, they set out to attach names to as many of the faces in that wonderful old photo as they could. And they managed to identify vir...Continue reading
Our friends just north of us in Dade County are trying to save their original log courthouse.

The State Historical Society of Missouri is a partner in the Bicentennial Alliance. The most recent episode focuses on the population of territorial Missouri. Listen here: https://bit.ly/2LUjmrQ
Our eVolunteers are simply amazing! In just a few short weeks, they’ve transcribed all 52,617 Missouri Death Certificates filed in 1970. From us here at the Mis...souri State Archivesand the larger genealogical communitythank you to all that participated in the project. We’ll announce it here when the records become available through our Missouri Death Certificate Database.
Today, the Missouri State Archives received the 1970 death certificate records from the Bureau of Vital Records and our in-house volunteers are hard at work preparing them for our imaging lab to scan.
The Library's presidential papers are now fully digitized and online, Washington through Coolidge, a treasure trove of historical and personal documents. Read more in Smithsonian Magazine: https://www.smithsonianmag.com//explore-american-history/
Here's another interesting piece we found during cabin cleanup today. Any thoughts on what it is?
Just a friendly reminder :)
Any thoughts about what this is? We were doing some cabin cleanup today and found a couple interesting pieces. We'll post the other separately.
