Mansard Monday Mansard roofs are seen on Second Empire buildings. The French style roof is a gambrel roof with sloping sides: the lower slope is steeper than the upper. They are typically pierced by dormer windows and it maximizes what was an attic space. This roof type is highly visible in Lafayette Square townhouses.... #lafayettesquare #stl #saintlouis #architecture #mansardmonday @archi_ologie #mansardtownhouse #buildingterms

Demo Alert: Washington University to Raze 6 buildings on the 4300 block of Forest Park Ave. Because there is a redevelopment plan in place for this area, which was approved by the Board of Aldermen, the demolition of these buildings will not be reviewed by the Cultural Resources Office or the Preservation Board. Landmarks Association knows that Cortex is a huge net benefit for St. Louis and we welcome quality new architecture and investment, but the demolition of these prom...inent historic homes appears to be a missed opportunity if indeed the planning objective of Cortex is to create a unique, diverse, and sustainable urban campus. See Richard Bose's NextSTL article for more information: https://nextstl.com//demo-alert-washington-university-to-/ Redevelopment Plan: https://www.stlouis-mo.gov//city/ordinances/ordinance.cfm If you want to raise concerns, contact Wash U. Landmarks Association submitted a short list of questions pertaining to historic preservation policy to the two St. Louis Mayoral candidates. Attached are the questions and the responses for candidate Cara Spencer. Both candidates took the time to provide thoughtful responses and we hope that you will find them informative. This is not an endorsement of either candidate, just information on their preservation views.

Happy Friday the 13th . Inverted torches adorn the Spink Mausoleum in Bellefontaine Cemetery. A lit torch represents life, immortality, and everlasting life, whereas an inverted torch represents death [life extinguished], life in the next realm, or the passing of the soul into the next life. . In 1881, Alfred Henry Spink, along with Chris von der Ahe, helped bring back a baseball team to St. Louis (a new Brown Stockings team). In 1886, he established a weekly newspaper, The S...porting News that emerged from World War I as the only national baseball newspaper or magazine. He turned it over to his younger brother Charles who in turn turned it over to his son John. John George Taylor Spink took over as publisher, editor, and advertising manager of The Sporting News from 1914 until his death in 1962. The Sporting News, also known as "The Bible of Baseball," still exists as a U.S.-based sports news website. Buried here is the family of Charles Spink #fridaythe13th #SportingNews #BibleofBaseball #Stlouis #STL #Spink #torch #cemetery #mausoleum #BellefontaineCemetery

Demolition around the up and coming Pruitt-Igoe site on the northside of St. Louis. Designed by Minoru Yamasaki of Leinweber, Yamasaki & Hellmuth in 1951, the 57-acre site consisted of 33 uniform 11-story modernist high-rise buildings. Federally financed under the Housing Act of 1949, the complex underwent imposing constraints and cost-cutting to meet the shortages of materials and cost limits. Designed as racially segregated, it became primarily African-American after 1954’s... desegregation verdict and the City’s white flight. Deferred maintenance led to rampant crime and vandalism. In 1972 the implosion of portions of the complex was televised with the rest razed by 1976. #pruittigoe#northside#northstlouis#stl#stlouis#stlmo#architecture#CassAve #NorthJeffersonAve #CarrStreet #North20thStreet#urbanrenewal#modernistarchitecture#urbanplanning#publichousing#segregation#minoruyamasaki#fail#demolition#implosion
