Even with a new judge and prosecutor, Ferguson continues to prosecute our client, Fred Watson, on baseless charges issued five years ago. The civil rights laws...uit we brought on his behalf is one of several that challenge the systemic abuses in our region's criminal legal system (i.e. police departments, municipal courts, and jails). Our debtors' prison case against the City of Ferguson is still pending. Last year, we settled a similar claim against Jennings, a city that neighbors Ferguson, for $4.75M. Our clients who were illegally jailed received $1,500/day - amounts that can never repay the time, jobs, and vehicles they lost - but monetary reparations that we were able to win through the courts. Since 2014, we've filed litigation on behalf of approximately 80 clients and estimate that those class action lawsuits impact upwards of 45,000 people in the region. Since 2014, we’ve supported local organizers and activists, and the movement that grew out of Ferguson. We represented 19 peaceful protesters, resulting in 18 acquittals or dismissals. The sole last case has been appealed. Our impact litigation has brought about systemic change in the municipal courts, driven legislative action, and sparked a national conversation about the systemic abuses in courts across the country. As a result, cities have recalled hundreds of thousands of warrants, forgiven millions of dollars in debt, and dismissed thousands of cases. Finally, we've won cash damages for local communities of more than $8 million since 2014. This impact would not be possible without our collaboration with co-counsel: SLU LAW Legal Clinic, Alec Karakatsanis, Center for Constitutional Rights, Campbell Law, LLC, Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, Tycko & Zavareei LLP, White & Case LLP, Dowd & Dowd, P.C., and Khazaeli Wyrsch, LLC. As we often say, the work is far from over. We continue to challenge systemic abuses such as cash bail, debtors' prisons, malicious prosecution, fines and fees, police misconduct, and excessive force in the criminal legal system. With your support we will keep fighting -- from the courtroom to the community -- we know we can't do this alone.
