On May 3, 1971, 20,000 demonstrators came to Washington, D.C., stopping traffic in the streets in a protest against the war in Vietnam. On that same day nearly 50 years ago, NPR, then a fledgling news organization, premiered a new afternoon show. The first All Things Considered presented a 23-minute sound portrait of the day's protests and confrontations that was broadcast to stations across the country. On Monday, Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that an "investigation will assess whether LMPD [Louisville Metro Police Department] engages in a pattern or practice of using unreasonable force, including with respect to people involved in peaceful, expressive activities". The police department fired one of the officers involved in the killing last year. The department said officer Brett Hankison "displayed an extreme indifference to the value of human life."

Activists from all over the state rallied outside the Missouri Capitol on Tuesday, demanding lawmakers follow the people’s wish to expand Medicaid. Some lawmakers, mostly Republicans, say the state can’t afford expanding Medicaid to 275,000 Missourians, even though the federal government will pay 90% of the cost. Others say that the voters were confused and misled about the ballot initiative because it didn’t include a specific funding plan.

It seems like almost yesterday that a young man from Chaffee, Missouri, joined the United States Marine Corps. The date was October 24, 1933. And, the young man, John H. Craven, went through boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and volunteered for sea duty in order to qualify for admission to the Naval Academy. Four Redhawks were featured on the 2020 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference team as SEMO Volleyball was predicted to finish first in the preseason poll. SEMO, the 2019 OVC Tournament Champions, earned 10 first place votes and 222 total votes in the predicted order of finish that was selected by OVC Head Volleyball Coaches and Sports Information Directors.

Law enforcement personnel, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and other emergency workers are eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine. Missourians 65 or older or those with chronic health conditions will be eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine starting next week. Gov. Mike Parson announced the next phase of the state’s vaccine distribution plan on Thursday.

Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, is now facing two counts of willful neglect of duty. The misdemeanor charges carry a punishment of up to $1,000 and up to one year imprisonment. They come almost seven years after the city of Flint began taking in water from the Flint River in an attempt to save money. More than 100,000 Flint residents were exposed to unsafe levels of lead.
