Verein Presents: Jews In Science #3 Sunday, April 18, 4:30 pm The greatest woman mathematician of all time.... In the continuation of the Science Series initiated and organized by the Verein Discussion Group, we are looking forward to hearing from Kol Rinah member, Dr, Alan Rosenberg who will teach us about Emmy Noether. Not only mathematicians revere her accomplishments, but her Noether’s Theorem also made her a favorite among physicists. She faced two significant impediments, a dismissive attitude towards women in academics, and her being Jewish. Dr. Rosenberg retired from a career as an Assistant Math Professor.

Washington University's Jewish Nobel Laureates March 21, 2021, 4:00 - 5:30 pm on Zoom Sponsored by Kol Rinah Verein Discussion Group For more information Contact Ralph Graff [email protected]... Wikipedia states that of the over 900 recipients of the Nobel Prize, at least 20% were Jews, a number far beyond their percent of the population. Why? Science tells us that we are products of our genes and our environment. Do Jews have an abundance of scientific genes? Has their environment stimulated interest in science? Clearly, Jewish scientific achievement has been accomplished in the face of environmental anti-Semitism. Jewish Laureate Elie Wiesel survived the extermination camps, Albert Einstein had to flee Nazi Germany, and as will be described, Rita Levi-Montalcini had to overcome fascism in Italy. In this lecture series each of the presenters has selected a scientist of interest. I have chosen a different approach. I will be reporting on Jewish Washington University scientists including nine Nobel Laureates, I participate in this series because of my love of science, my pride as a Washington University product and my admiration of Judaism. At the end of my presentation I will attempt to analyze the information that I have accumulated and offer thoughts on the attraction of Jews to science. Perhaps by the end of the series, we will have some insight into the relationship between Judaism and science.

The Exodus from Egypt: Judaism’s Master Story of Hope Tuesday, March 16, 2021 7:00 - 8:30 pm on Zoom This session will explore the concept of the Exodus as a master story and as such, how it positions hope at the very heart of Judaism. We’ll discuss midrashic texts on the Exodus which illustrate hope in action, Moses’ leadership role in sustaining the Israelites’ hope for redemption, and several suggestions for conversations at your Passover Seder. David Arnow, Ph.D., a clini...cal psychologist, received his doctorate from Boston University. He is a scholar of the festival of Passover and the author of many articles and two books on that subject, including Creating Lively Passover Seders: A Sourcebook of Engaging Tales, Texts & Activities, 2nd Edition (2011), and My People’s Passover Haggadah: Traditional Texts, Modern Commentaries (2008), co-edited with Lawrence A. Hoffman. He is a coauthor of the website Exodus Conversations: How the Story of the Exodus Speaks to Jews, Christians, and Muslims (www.exodusconversations.org) and Leadership in the Bible: A Practical Guide for Today, co-authored with Paul Ohana. His latest book, Choosing Hope: The Heritage of Judaism, will be published by The Jewish Publication Society in March of 2022. For more information: [email protected]

A Community Art Project In a time when we can't be physically together, we wanted to create something that shows we are still a close community. Families may sign up for a specific time to come to our synagogue on Maryland Ave., which will be set up with socially distant "art stations". At each station will be the materials to paint a square that will be part of a large painting created by all particpants. When all squares have been painted, we will assemble them into a beau...tiful art piece that will be hung on the wall of our new building. Families may sign up for a 30 minute block, and we will limit each block to 3 families. Masks are required for people over the age of 2. Social distancing will be enforced.
