Staff members of Kindred Hospital St. Louis took the Core Six Value, Be Kinder Than Expected, to the streets on Thanksgiving week to provide sandwiches, water and toiletry items to 50 people in need. Everyone who participated in one way or another experienced the feeling of helping to make a difference, shared Kevin Shrake, CEO of Kindred St. Louis. We are all blessed, and this was a small way to demonstrate gratitude during Thanksgiving week and pass our blessings on to others not as fortunate. We believe in supporting our community - not only within the walls of or organization - but also outside our facility.

Kindred Hospital St. Louis has received a $5,000 grant to directly aid Teens of Tomorrow, a local not-for-profit organization that helps at-risk teens through safe housing, mentoring and other programs. Kevin Shrake, the CEO of Kindred Hospital St. Louis, stated: We are very excited to be a part of this important initiative. The money will be used for a very tangible project and will provide necessary repairs and renovation to a safe house located in the heart of St. Louis... that happens to be only two miles from Kindred Hospital. This is also a perfect way to live our Core Value, Be Kinder than Expected, by putting it to work for the good of our community. Charles Shelton, Founder and Executive Director of Teens of Tomorrow, commented: This money is very timely and the need is great. It is so important to have a safe venue for our youth to receive mentoring and have a place to sleep. These are common privileges that we often take for granted. We will put this money to use in a very visible way through this renovation project. Thanks to Kindred Hospital St. Louis and the Kindred Foundation of Inclusion and Equity for making this happen!

Happy Hanukkah! Hanukkah is celebrated from sundown on November 28 to sundown on December 6. This holiday commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army, and the subsequent miracle of rededicating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and restoring its menorah. The miracle of Hanukkah is that the one vial of oil that was found to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day lasted for eight full days. By living out our Core Values of Respecting Individuality to Create... the Team and Being Kinder than Expected, we are better prepared to recognize, understand and learn more about other cultures and religious observances such as Hanukkah. We wish all celebrants a Hanukkah Sameach (Happy Hanukkah) as we recognize and respect your rich religious history.

Diwali is a major festival celebrated over five days in many parts of India by people of different faiths including many Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Muslims and some Buddhists. It is sometimes referred to as the festival of lights. Many Hindus observe Diwali by lighting small oil lamps known as ‘diyas.' The lamps symbolize the triumph of light over darkness and evil.

Quinnie is a dedicated and passionate CNA at Kindred Hospital St. Louis who never fails to endear herself to her patients and family members as well as her coworkers. Now a two-time Employee of the Month, Quinnie’s tireless work ethic during the COVID pandemic stood out as she cared for her patients like they were family members. If we get 10 online reviews from patients and family members, it’s not unusual for Quinnie to be mentioned by name in at least half of them, said Kevin Shrake, the CEO of the facility. One of the greatest compliments I’ve heard about Quinnie came from a nurse at our hospital who said ‘I hope I never need medical services, but if I do, I hope Quinnie will be my CNA!’

Kindred Hospital St. Louis recently conducted a very innovative and COVID-friendly recruitment event for RNs and CNAs. Potential employees were invited to meet staff and enjoy some beautiful weather, a barbeque lunch and jazz music, all in a socially distanced and safe outdoor environment. Candidates got to tour the hospital, meet our leadership team and find out firsthand how we act out our core values with our actions and not just our words, shared Kevin Shrake, the CEO of the facility. We had several viable candidates we followed up with, two nurses already scheduled to come shadow one of our nurses to directly experience how we make a difference in people’s lives every day, and have signed on five new employees. Definitely an outstanding return on a rather small investment!

Kindred Hospital St. Louis has instituted a new process of conducting employee forum meetings to supplement the shift change meetings and individual conferences that are already being conducted. We wanted to increase the participation and involvement of our front line caregivers, so we took the meeting to them, affirmed Kevin Shrake, CEO. Key members of our leadership team loaded a cart with fun snacks and had listening sessions over two different days to cover all shifts ...in all areas of the hospital. Over 50% of our entire base staff participated in these sessions, and we received input from more bedside caregivers. Among many great ideas and suggestions, one key item that came out of the meetings was a commitment to do a makeover of our two employee lounges. Thank you to everyone who participated we are proud of our Kindred family! See more

It was a picture-perfect day in St. Louis for the first-ever CEO Invitational Corn Hole Tournament. Kevin Shrake, the CEO of Kindred Hospital St. Louis, challenged everyone on staff to take a five-minute break and meet outside to try and wrestle the title of Best Kindred Corn Hole Player from him. The competition was fierce. Many tried and came up short, until Yolanda, the hospital’s administrative assistant, stepped up. With steely resolve and unerring aim, she took down t...he CEO in a close match to claim the title and bragging rights. For Kevin, alas, it was a moment of public humiliation, but one he weathered gladly as it resulted in a tremendous amount of smiles and laughter. What a great way to Have Fun in What You Do! said Kevin at the end of the challenge. We like to bring our Core Six Values to life, and this was a fantastic way to do just that. See more
