Vegetable Scoop: What the heck is Jicama? Jicama is pronounced HEE-kah-mah. It was a dietary staple on ships in the 17th century because of its quenching properties and ability to last ... without refrigeration. Jicama is the root of a legume or bean plant that grows in Mexico, and Central and South America. It tastes like a cross between a potato and a pear. Some ways to eat Jicama include cutting it into sticks and using it as a raw vegetable, putting it into soups or stir fry, and using it in salads with citrus You may have seen this strange veggie in your lunch this week. Raise your hand if you tried it! #TeamKCPS #KCPSkidseat #varyyourveggies #schoolmealsrock
October menus are up! Check them out! http://www.schoolnutritionandfitness.com/index.php #TeamKCPS #schoolfoodrocks #KCPSkidseat
Veggie Scoop: Radish If you have never tried a radish, this might be the week to do so! We would describe radishes as crunchy, zingy, and peppery! But how do you eat a radish? Raw- try layering thin slices on buttered bread or dipping in ranch!... Roasted- through in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes and the peppery-ness is calmed down! In a Taco- add thin slices for that needed crunch in a taco! How would you describe a radish? #TeamKCPS #KCPSkidseat #Veggies #schoolfoodrocks
Veggie Scoop: Celery Whether or not you like celery, here are some fun facts! *Celery can reach the height of 3.3 feet.... *Celery was initially used as medicine in treatment of toothache *All parts of celery are edible. Stalks can be used raw, baked, fried or boiled. They are often used in preparation of omelets, casseroles, sauces, salads. Leaves are mostly used for decoration and for seasoning of dishes. Look for celery in your lunches this week along with some other veggie surprises we will announce tomorrow! #TeamKCPS #Eatyourveggies #KCPSkidseat #Schoolfoodrocks
