Whew--what a day! Thanks to everyone who took the time to walk or run in our annual 5K; major thanks to our race co-directors, Estelle Brooks and Cara Gilmore, for their great preparation tips (and hard work in signing up runners!); heartfelt thanks to everyone who provided donations or sponsorships; and thanks to those who stand united with us toward a common cause: supporting grieving families, educating the community, and working to prevent the senseless violence that plagues our city. Hope & Healing Meet and Greet: No More Victims In commemoration of Crime Victims’ Rights Week, KC Mothers in Charge is hosting its first Meet and Greet event of 2021. On Thursday, April 22, from 5-7 p.m., we invite you to come out and reflect with us as we offer words of encouragement and support for those who are mourning loved ones lost to violence. We will have a moment of silence and prayer for our city and first responders, and encourage all who plan to attend to bring a... photo of a loved one lost to violent crime, so we can honor them together. Please note: masks / social distancing will be required. So that we can plan for your attendance, please email [email protected] or call 816.912.2601 by Thursday, April 15, 2 p.m. to RSVP. #WeWillAlwaysRememberThem #StoptheViolence

KC MIC Founder and Program Director Rosilyn Temple's thoughts about recent teenage homicide victims Dominik Simmons and Dominique Nelson, who were "friends until the end, speak volumes: "We cannot keep allowing our children to be murdered in our neighborhoods and our streets. #StoptheViolence #WeWillAlwaysRememberThem https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article250337356.html

Special thanks to our community partners -- KCPD, Sheffield Neighborhood Association and Mattie Rhodes Center -- along with our engaged community and university volunteers, who came together for a clean up day at Greenleaf Apartments in support of KC MIC’s "Why Are We So Angry?" project. "Why Are We So Angry?" encourages community engagement by focusing on anti-retaliation and conflict resolution strategies, and by encouraging neighborhood residents to call the police or the TIPS Hotline to report crimes.

On Wednesday night, Founder & Program Director Rosilyn Temple, along with KC MIC’s Core Mothers and other loved ones, stood with fellow Core Mother Bonita Jones to honor the life of her son, Barron Byron Shelton, on the 1-year anniversary of his passing. During the celebration of life, the Core Mothers presented Bonita with a philodendron plant, which is known for its heart-shaped leaves and ability to thrive. #WeWillAlwaysRememberThem #StoptheViolence

Yesterday, KC Mothers in Charge joined with family and loved ones in celebrating the life and legacy of Jackie JJ Johnson, known to the community as JJ the Barber, whose 2019 homicide remains unsolved. We stand with his mother and father, and with all those in our community who have lost loved ones to senseless violence. #WeWillAlwaysRememberThem #StoptheViolence

Today, we celebrate a history maker of our own... As part of the Black History Month coverage at 41 Action News - KSHB-TV, our very own Founder and Program Director, Rosilyn Temple, is being featured as someone who influences positive change and makes an impact in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Today marks the beginning of National Gun Violence Survivors Week (Feb. 1 7, 2021), so let’s begin with a startling a fact: Did you know that by early February, more people are killed with guns in the U.S. than are killed with guns in other high-income countries in an entire year? This year’s #GVSurvivorsWeek campaign focuses on the stories of America’s gun violence survivors. In support, be sure to visit www.momentsthatsurvive.org, a year-round digital storytelling site and campaign in which Americans across the country share details of their experiences, in their own words. #StoptheViolence

#AboutLastNight: Thanks to those who joined KC Mothers in Charge at the Robert J. Mohart Multipurpose Center on Thursday night for our first Hope and Healing Support Group of 2021. Surviving loved ones of homicide victims and program volunteers came out to show (socially-distanced!) support to one another, and hear inspiring words of encouragement from our founder and program director, Rosilyn Temple. #WeWillAlwaysRememberThem #StopTheViolence
