Congratulations to Kansas City Chorus’s newest quartet, Gingersnap! Lead Maggie Tirrell, baritone Misty Swanner, tenor Madison Bhagalia and bass Carol Schumacher formed the foursome about three weeks before the pandemic hit. Rolling with the times, they submitted an audition video instead of performing live for the Music Team. We are so glad the entire chorus was able to watch the video with the Music Team during a Tuesday night Zoom practice. Happy 75th Birthday, Sweet Adelines! 1945-2020 This birthday is commemorated as Barbershop Music Appreciation Day, and we will be sharing our memories between now and Oct. We want to thank Edna Mae Anderson, who invited a group of women who wanted to sing barbershop harmony to her Tulsa, Okla., home on July 13, 1945. This was the beginning of Sweet Adelines International.... In September 1946, two more like-minded ladies in Kansas City, Mo., had the same desire to sing in a female barbershop chorus. Martinez Franks and Josephine Trabon began organizing the Kansas City Chapter, with Joseph Stern as director. Joe also was the director of the Heart of America Chorus, the local men’s barbershop chorus. The Kansas City Sweet Adelines chapter, chartered in October 1948, is the "oldest continuously active chorus" in the Sweet Adelines organization and will celebrate its 72nd birthday later this year.
