This is a follow-up regarding the Milwaukee-Eight (M8) Valve Seat issue. We had a lot of good comments and wanted to share what we did before we decided to pos...t the video. We noticed this on our big bore kits when we were putting the heads back on with new rings - we make it a standard practice to put the head on torque and leak the motor down to make sure that we have no issues. That’s when we saw the 25-28% leak down. Please note - this was NOT going past the rings. It was past the valve and the valve seats. GMS Racing helped us identify a means to pressurize the port from the outside so we can show you the leak down. It was a great idea. You will note that the leak down is not going past the valve seat. It’s between the head and the seat itself. The whole issue is not a machining issue - it’s when the seats are being installed. When the seats are pressed in or, knocked in - it cocks and takes the material and scores the bore to the bottom of the seat hole. Material is built up under the seat area. When we measure our press fit using a micrometer, we’re seeing .0025-.0030 of variation in the O.D. of the seat and that material ends up at the bottom. That’s what cocks the seat and allows for it to leak underneath. So the seat does not have a complete press all the way around it. That’s why we’re seeing this issue. We just wanted to share the effort that we went through to prove the issue. This was not a single head issue, it was repetitive so we wanted to make you aware of it. A quick video to show some issues that we're seeing with the Milwaukee-Eight(M8s). We're doing a leak down on the motors before we disassemble them and we're f...inding a 20-25% leak down on the motors. This is attributed to the seats in the heads - the exhausts are loose in the heads. This is going to create an issue down the road with the seats coming loose in the heads and it should be checked. The machining of the seat hole is off. If we're doing a bike in-house, we'll leak the motor down after we get the pushrods to see where we're at - they should be between 3-5% (no more than that). The heads that are coming in that we are doing that do not have bikes on them - we've made a fixture that before we break the head down, we bolt this onto the head and leak down the head by itself. Normally, it will show up very quickly. We also do a drop test on these heads - we heat the heads to press the guides out, we bring them up to a temperature then, drop it onto a piece of plywood to see if it comes loose. Something that we wanted to bring to your attention. Out of the sets we've seen, we've had about 6 sets with this seat issue. Keep this in mind - if you're at your Harley dealership, a leak down test will show the issue. We're set-up on the CNC machine to machine out the holes, put new seats in and sync everything to the proper depth and get you up and going again.
