Scurry County Jail of 1912 In 1911 the Commissioners court of Scurry County presented plans for a new jail. Since the two previous jailhouses (built in 1884 & 1886) had proven insufficient for the county’s needs. Land at this site was purchased with bond money and the brick building was completed using local labor. In 1912, the first floor housed the jailer and his family, while the prisoners’ cells and a hospital occupied the second and third stores. A trapdoor was included... for use as a hanging gallows. This jail served the citizens of Scurry County for over sixty years. -Texas Historical Commission in 1982. While on our vacation of necessity I was able to explore and play with my camera. I am really into shooting pictures of historic places, and was not disappointed one bit on this trip. One of the places we went to was Snyder, Texas. Some areas seem to have an, almost, big town feel while others have a very small down-home feel. Near the corner of 27th and College, we located the Scurry County Jail of 1912. I jumped out, starting shooting pictures in hopes to turn them into great images. I read the historical marker sign and snapped away. I got pictures of the building, doors, windows, lights. I tried to capture different textures, feels and sense of the place. As I came around the side of the building, a sadness came over me. I read that the family lived downstairs while the inmates lived above them. It didn’t hit me until I seen the playground in the back yard. Families living in the building equaled children living in the building. How sad is that. There was a hatch built into the building for hanging, although I cannot find anything that states it was ever actually used. So far, I haven’t found much history of it online. I do plan to learn more about it when I return in the future. And maybe I can find the person responsible for it and they will give me a tour and take indoor shots. This building has fascinated me for some unknown reason. I noticed the building is in disrepair and they have tried to gather enough money for repairs. Maybe it is something else I can get involved in, when we move. When I find the newest fundraiser, I will be sure to update you all. Long story short, our countries history is rich. I want to learn as much of the real history as I can, while documenting what I see. Hope you all enjoy. Karie
