On this Veterans Day, Military Matters salutes the brave women and men who have served our country. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. - John F. Kennedy

It’s National Veterans Small Business Week, Nov. 2-6, 2020! At #KCMBF we take pride in supporting veterans with their legal needs through our Military Matters program. But even if you aren’t a practicing lawyer, there are plenty of other ways you can support veterans here in Kansas City. We encourage you to search #VetBiz to find out how other organizations and individuals are supporting veterans, and to see what veteran-owned small businesses reside in your community. Visit sba.gov/nvsbw for more information.

We are proud to represent Kansas City’s participation in ABA’s 2020 #CelebrateProBono. Our Military Matters program has been adapted to continue serving active duty military and veterans in the Kansas City community through the pandemic, assisting them in finding legal assistance. Since the program’s start in 2016, Military Matters has coordinated over $1 million dollars of pro bono legal services for military service members. As COVID-19 continues to affect our community, we will continue rising to meet the challenge of unmet legal needs. Our 23rd annual Domestic Violence Alliance was a success! This year’s event was focused on The Role of Evidence in Domestic Violence Cases, and featured a range of speakers from the Blue Springs Police Department, the Kansas City crime lab, and Kansas City domestic courts just to name a few. We are incredibly thankful to all of our speakers, to our planning committee, and other community partners who helped put this event together in a virtual format this year. A special thank you to KCMBA for providing free CLE. We hope all who attended gained a better understanding of evidence within domestic violence cases, and we hope to see you again next year! Featured photo includes, from top left to bottom right: Darren E. Korte, Crissy L. Del Percio, Hon. Mary F. Weir, Hon. Courtney A. Wachal, Hon. Bryan E. Round.

For the first time I knew I had someone on my side, fighting for me, wanting me to succeed. I had a champion who not only believed me, but, more importantly, believed in meYou didn’t judge me or doubt me. You reached out to me and said, ‘Let me help you.’ Those words changed the course of my life. -Military Matters Veteran In the past few years, KCMBF has experienced significant growth and success, resulting in tremendous community impact. Domestic Violence takes place in our nation every minute of every day, occurring approximately every 15 seconds. Most of these cases are left behind closed doors, and as few as 34% of victims ever receive medical treatment for their injuries. Domestic Violence Awareness Month was formed to connect and unify victims, to call for support, and to help break these chains of violence. For 23 years, KCMBF has hosted the Domestic Violence Alliance, a conference of law professionals, police officers, social workers, and medical professionals meant to collaborate and bring awareness to domestic violence here in Kansas City. We are proud to do this work, and to do our part in the fight against domestic violence. Click here to learn more about KCMBF’s work: www.kcmbf.org/dva
